For years, Azam Khan has been a name that divides opinion among Pakistan cricket fans. Some admire his power-hitting, others point to his fitness as the stumbling block holding him back. Now, the 27-year-old wicketkeeper-batter has spoken openly about those challenges and his determination to change the narrative.
Putting Fitness First at the NCA
Speaking in an interview, Azam revealed that he is currently training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore with a sharper focus on fitness.
“Right now, I am in Lahore and trying to work on my fitness and game at the NCA,” he said.
The Karachi-born cricketer admitted that his weight-loss journey will take time and consistency, not quick fixes.
“My weight loss won’t happen in a couple of weeks or days, it needs time. For the past four or five years, I have been playing a lot of cricket, so I didn’t have the chance to properly focus on my fitness.”
Breaking Old Habits
Azam, the son of former Pakistan captain Moin Khan, has long been under scrutiny for his body shape. Critics have often suggested that his eating habits contributed to his struggles, something he now openly accepts.
“I had some bad eating habits, but that’s not an excuse anymore,” he admitted, stressing that excuses will not help him earn back a place in the national side.
Eyes on a Comeback
The right-hander last represented Pakistan during the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA but failed to make a mark. With just 88 runs in 13 innings at an average of 8.80, he knows his international record doesn’t reflect his domestic talent.
Still, he remains hungry for another shot in the green jersey.
“The plan is to play at the highest level, and for that, you have to train to be the best. Many players have played internationally, but then disappeared. If I want to sustain myself, I need to work twice as hard as I am now,” Azam emphasised.
