As the first generation of digital natives, Gen Z was expected to embrace artificial intelligence with open arms. However, recent data reveal a surprising shift in this relationship. While young people still use these tools frequently, their initial excitement is curdling into resentment. According to the latest Gallup and Walton Family Foundation report, the honeymoon phase with AI is officially over.

A growing number of students and young professionals now view the technology with a mix of anxiety and outright anger. They recognise its power but fear the long-term cost to their careers and creativity.

The Stagnation of Adoption

The rapid growth of AI use among Gen Z has hit a sudden plateau. Last year, many predicted that adoption rates would continue to skyrocket. Instead, weekly usage remains relatively stable at 51%, showing only a minor increase from 2025. This suggests that while the technology is accessible, it has not become the essential daily companion many envisioned.

Instead of joy, a psychological tug-of-war has emerged:

  • Rising Resentment: Roughly 31% of Gen Z now report feeling angry toward AI, a significant jump from 22% last year.
  • Fading Hope: Excitement for the technology plummeted by 14 points, while hopefulness dropped to a low of 18%.
  • Dominant Anxiety: While curiosity remains high, it is now coupled with a 42% anxiety rate regarding what the future holds.

Workplace Scepticism and Career Fears

Young workers are increasingly worried that AI will dismantle the traditional career ladder. While 56% of Gen-Z employees admit that AI helps them finish tasks faster, they see a productivity trap ahead. They worry that being efficient today will lead to a lack of skills tomorrow.

The report highlights several specific professional concerns:

  • The Learning Gap: 80% of respondents believe that relying on AI will make it harder to learn foundational skills in the long run.
  • Risk Assessment: Nearly half of Gen Z workers now believe the risks of AI outweigh the benefits in a professional setting.
  • Mentorship Loss: Many fear that by automating entry-level tasks, they lose the critical on-the-job training that defines early career growth.

The Erosion of Human Creativity

In educational settings, the novelty of AI is being replaced by a fear of cognitive erosion. Students are no longer just using AI for help; they are worrying about how it changes their brains. There is a growing consensus that over-reliance on algorithms is hurting the very traits that make humans unique.

The data points to a deep mistrust of the technology’s impact on personal development:

  • Critical Thinking: 42% of Gen-Zers believe AI is harmful to their ability to think for themselves.
  • Creative Spark: 38% feel the technology actively stifles their original creativity.
  • Academic Integrity: About 41% of students believe their peers are using AI to cheat, even when prohibited, which creates a toxic academic environment.

A Preference for Human Connection

Despite the digital nature of their lives, Gen Z still craves human interaction for important matters. When the stakes are high, they do not trust a machine to provide empathy or nuanced advice. This preference is consistent across multiple sectors, showing that AI cannot replace human trust.

According to the findings, over 80% of Gen Z would choose a human over an AI for:

  • Mental health support and counselling
  • Financial planning and investment advice
  • Tutoring or personalised educational guidance

Gen-Z’s evolving stance on AI serves as a wake-up call for tech developers and employers alike. This generation understands the utility of the technology, but they refuse to ignore its ethical and professional consequences. They are demanding a future where AI supports human growth rather than replacing it. Moving forward, the challenge will be to balance the speed of automation with the irreplaceable value of human skill and connection.
