The UK government has formally announced that it will halt issuing study visas to nationals from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan. Additionally, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed that the government will stop issuing skilled worker visas to Afghan nationals. Officials state that about 95 per cent of Afghans who entered the UK on student visas later applied for asylum. Meanwhile, claims from Myanmar students jumped sixteenfold, and Cameroon and Sudan rose more than four times. This has ramped up the pressure on the country’s asylum system.
