The West Indies continued their flawless start to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, cruising past Italy by 42 runs in their final group-stage match at the iconic Eden Gardens on Thursday. With the victory, the Caribbean side enters the Super Eight unbeaten, sending a clear warning to the other contenders.

West Indies Set the Tone

Batting first, the West Indies got off to a shaky start. Brandon King fell on the second ball of the second over, and Shimron Hetmyer departed cheaply for one, leaving the side reeling at 31-2 in just 4.1 overs.

But skipper Shai Hope and Roston Chase steadied the innings with a 64-run partnership, putting the team back on course. Hope, in particular, showcased his class, crafting a magnificent 75 off 46 balls, including six fours and four sixes.

Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, the Caribbean side managed a competitive total of 165, aided by Sherfane Rutherford’s brisk 24 off 15 deliveries and Matthew Forde’s handy cameo of 16 off eight.

Bowlers Shine, Italy Struggle

Chasing 166, Italy struggled to gain momentum. Ben Manenti top-scored with 26, JJ Smuts contributed 24, and Anthony Mosca added 19, but it was never enough. West Indies’ bowlers dominated from the start.

Shamar Joseph was the star with the ball, claiming 4-30 in his four overs. He received brilliant support from Matthew Forde, who picked up three wickets, Gudakesh Motie with two, and Akeal Hosein with one. Italy could only manage 123 in 18 overs, falling well short of the target.

A Perfect Record Maintained

This victory marks the West Indies’ fourth consecutive win in the group stage. The team has been clinical in all departments, batting, bowling, and fielding, and remains a serious contender as the tournament progresses.

The Caribbean side will next face India in the Super Eight fixture at Mumbai on March 1, a match that promises fireworks given India’s home advantage.
