Player Categories Revealed Ahead of PSL 11 Auction: Report

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) will, for the first time in its history, move away from its familiar draft system and adopt a full-fledged player auction for the landmark season 11. And honestly, it is hard not to feel the excitement.

Auctions change everything. They expose a player’s true market value, trigger bidding wars, and show exactly how badly a franchise wants a certain name. Unlike the draft, where order and categories limit the drama, auctions put pressure, money and reputation on the table at the same time.

But before the hammer comes down, there is one crucial step. Player categories have to be finalised. These brackets determine base prices and shape the entire auction strategy. And now, early signals are starting to emerge.

Why Player Categories Matter?

In an auction model, categories are not just labels. They are power positions. A jump from Diamond to Platinum can add serious value to a player’s stock. A drop, on the other hand, can reshape how franchises view a cricketer’s recent form and future role.

With two new teams, Hyderabad and Sialkot, entering the league, competition will be fiercer than ever. Every category decision could spark a bidding war.

Islamabad United

According to sources, Shadab Khan, Imad Wasim and Naseem Shah are likely to retain their Platinum status, which makes sense given their impact and leadership roles.

There are promotions too. Pakistan’s T20I skipper Salman Ali Agha and all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz are set to move up from Diamond to Platinum, reflecting their growing importance in white-ball cricket.

Meanwhile, Sahibzada Farhan is expected to land in the Gold category, while Azam Khan could slide from Diamond to Gold, a move that may raise a few eyebrows.

Karachi Kings

Hasan Ali is likely to be promoted from Diamond to Platinum, a reward for his experience and recent performances. On the flip side, Abbas Afridi is expected to drop from Platinum to Diamond.

There are further changes lower down the list. Khushdil Shah and Aamir Jamal are likely to move from Diamond to Gold, while Arafat Minhas could slide from Gold to Silver.

Shan Masood is expected to stay in the Diamond category.

Lahore Qalandars

Shaheen Shah Afridi, Fakhar Zaman and Haris Rauf are all expected to retain their places in the Platinum category, which will keep them among the most sought-after names if they go into the auction.

There is upward movement elsewhere, too. Salman Mirza is likely to rise from Gold to Diamond, while Mohammad Naeem is expected to move from Emerging to Silver.

Peshawar Zalmi

Babar Azam and Saim Ayub are expected to remain in the Platinum category. Their value in the shortest format is well established.

However, Mohammad Haris and Mohammad Ali may drop from Diamond to Gold, signalling a possible rethink around their recent performances.

Multan Sultans

Despite recent struggles in T20 cricket, Mohammad Rizwan is set to retain his Platinum status, underlining his importance as both a batter and a leader.

At the same time, Usama Mir and Iftikhar Ahmed are expected to move from Platinum to Diamond. Mohammad Hasnain could drop from Diamond to Gold, while Akif Javed is likely to earn a promotion from Silver to Gold.

Quetta Gladiators

Faheem Ashraf and Mohammad Amir are expected to stay in the Platinum category. Meanwhile, Abrar Ahmed is likely to be promoted from Diamond to Platinum, a move that reflects his growing reputation.

Sources also suggest Mohammad Wasim Junior could move from Gold to Diamond, while Usman Tariq may jump from Silver to Diamond.

Further down, Khawaja Nafay and Hasan Nawaz are expected to rise from Silver and Emerging to Gold, respectively.

What This Means for the Auction

If these categories are confirmed, the PSL auction could be explosive.

More Platinum players mean higher base prices. Promotions will trigger aggressive bidding, especially with two new franchises eager to build competitive squads from scratch.

Most importantly, fans are finally going to see what their favourite players are really worth. And once the auction begins, there will be no hiding. Just paddles up, bids flying, and reputations being tested.
