The word of the year by Dictionary.com this time isn’t your usual word; it’s something that parents might have heard of, but never quite understood. The online platform Dictionary.com has officially named it the word of the year: 67, pronounced as six seven. If you’re confused about what it means, fret not, you’re not the only one. In fact, Dictionary.com itself isn’t quite sure what it means.
“You might be feeling a familiar vexation at the sight of these two formerly innocuous numerals,” Dictionary.com said. But if you have a Gen-Alpha around, I’m sure they know what exactly we’re talking about.
What is 6 7?
It all seems to have started with rapper Skrilla’s 2024 track “Doot Doot (6-7).” The song gained traction on TikTok, often used in videos featuring basketball players, including NBA star LaMelo Ball, who stands 6-foot-7.
The trend exploded when a boy, now famously known as “The 6-7 Kid,” shouted the catchy phrase in a viral video, while another boy beside him juggled his hands to the beat. The clip quickly spread across social media, cementing the phrase as an internet sensation.

As for what it means, no one exactly knows.
And sometimes, the meaning depends on who’s on the receiving end of “6-7.” Even its spelling is debated: is it 6-7, 6 7, or six seven?
According to Dictionary.com, the phrase can mean “so-so” or “maybe this, maybe that,” especially when paired with the now-iconic juggling hands gesture. Meanwhile, Merriam-Webster describes it as “a nonsensical expression used especially by teens and tweens.”
For some, it’s simply a way to irritate adults when being questioned.
Why Is It The Word Of The Year?
Dictionary.com says it looks for words that influence how we talk with each other and communicate online. This led to making this year’s decision as well.
The site scoured search engines, headlines and social media trends in making its choice. Online searches for “6-7” took off dramatically over the summer, it said, and haven’t slowed, growing by six times since June.
“The Word of the Year isn’t just about popular usage; it reveals the stories we tell about ourselves and how we’ve changed over the year,” the site said
