The Asia Cup 2025 may have ended with India lifting the title on the field, but the aftermath has been anything but celebratory. What should have been a proud moment for Indian cricket has turned into one of the most controversial episodes in modern cricket history.
Rashid Latif Calls for Suspension
Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif wasted no time in expressing his anger over India’s refusal to accept the Asia Cup trophy from ACC President Mohsin Naqvi. Taking to his official X account (formerly Twitter), Latif did not mince words.
“Indian cricket team a good candidate for suspension from ICC, after refusing to collect the Asia Cup 2025 trophy and awards from the ACC Chairman,” he wrote.
“In any other sport, this would have been an open and shut case. But with ICC Chairman, CEO, CFO, Commercial chief, and head of Events and Communications being Indians, suspension seems unlikely. Ugly day for cricket as India once again breached the spirit and essence of the gentleman’s game, that too in broad daylight.”

He followed it up with another post aimed directly at India’s captain.
“Indian cricketers, particularly captain Suryakumar, commit more ICC Code of Conduct breaches. Hope PCB will not botch up this time and ensure Richie Richardson takes timely punitive actions.”

Later, he went even further, criticising both the players and the political undertones in the sport.
“From handshake snub to trophy boycott: India’s cricket team faces global backlash amid allegations of defying ICC constitution,” Latif wrote.
“The undisputed involvement of the Indian government in cricket governance raises questions about fairness. Is this a sign of more trouble ahead for the sport?”

A Tournament Full of Tensions
This year’s Asia Cup was already overshadowed by politics. India and Pakistan met for the first time since the cross-border conflicts earlier in May. Cricket has often continued despite political unrest, but this time the bitterness was impossible to ignore.
Players refused to shake hands before and after matches, exchanged political taunts, and avoided any semblance of camaraderie. For a sport often called the gentleman’s game, it was a grim sight.
The Trophy Controversy
The lowest point came after the final in Dubai, where India beat Pakistan by five wickets in a nail-biting finish. Instead of lifting the trophy in front of millions of fans, the team chose to boycott the presentation because the silverware was to be handed over by Mohsin Naqvi, who doubles as Pakistan’s interior minister and PCB chairman.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the decision to ANI: “We have decided not to take the Asia Cup trophy from the ACC chairman, who happens to be one of the main [political] leaders of Pakistan. So we decided not to take it from him.”
In an awkward moment, India later celebrated on the podium with no actual trophy in sight, resorting instead to holding up an imaginary one. It was a bizarre and unprecedented scene in cricket.
A Violation of Spirit and Rules
For many, including Rashid Latif, this was a blatant violation of the ICC’s code of conduct and basic sportsmanship. Cricket has seen fierce rivalries, but rarely has it descended into such symbolic defiance on the biggest stage.
Instead of basking in the glory of their hard-earned win, India’s actions have left them facing criticism worldwide. What could have been remembered as a thrilling final will now forever be linked to the day the champions refused their own trophy.
