Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist and media personality in the United States, was shot dead on Thursday afternoon while speaking at Utah Valley University, prompting an immediate campus lockdown and high‐level political reactions. He was 31 years old.
What Happened?
Kirk was taking part in a “Prove Me Wrong” style debate outdoors at Utah Valley University, the first stop in his planned “American Comeback Tour,” when the gunfire erupted. According to video footage, he was speaking to a student audience about mass shootings and transgender issues when a loud crack resounded. Moments later, Kirk clutched his neck and collapsed from his chair, blood visible, as the crowd scattered.
The shot came roughly 20 minutes after he began speaking, about 12:10 p.m. local time. The bullet was reportedly fired from a rooftop or possibly from an open window of the university’s Losee Center, approximately 180 metres (200 yards) away from the speaking area. No one else was physically harmed. Kirk’s wife and children were present at the event.
Who Was Charlie Kirk?
Kirk co‐founded Turning Point USA at age 18; the organisation became one of the most visible conservative youth movements in the US. He was known as a key voice within the pro‐Trump network, often engaged in culture war debates around gender, race, and immigration.
Kirk was also often seen speaking against Islam in debates and time and again refused to acknowledge the land of Palestine and praised the death of Palestinians.
Investigation and Reaction
Authorities are investigating and have described a person of interest in custody, though no immediate charges have been filed. The individual was dressed in all dark clothing. President Donald Trump called the killing “a dark moment for the US.”
Trump also ordered flags lowered to half‐staff. Former President Barack Obama called the killing “despicable violence” that doesn’t belong in American democracy.
