Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle has stormed global cinemas, becoming the highest-grossing Japanese and anime film of all time with more than US$555 million worldwide. In North America, it crossed US$104 million within two weekends, the strongest performance ever for a Japanese release.

This achievement isn’t just about numbers; it’s proof that anime has transformed from niche fandom into mainstream global entertainment.

Record-Breaking Success

The film broke numerous records, from Japan’s biggest opening day to the fastest climb past ¥10 billion. In the U.S., it outpaced all prior anime titles, with a remarkable US$70 million opening weekend. Its success echoes the performance of 2020’s Mugen Train, which also surpassed US$500 million, but Infinity Castle has gone even further.

Why It Worked?

Several factors caused the film’s success. The franchise already had massive global momentum, with the manga, anime series, and Mugen Train building a loyal base. Produced by Ufotable with Aniplex, and distributed worldwide by Sony Pictures and Crunchyroll, the film benefited from a unique blend of outreach and Hollywood-scale distribution.

Crunchyroll CEO Rahul Purini told The Hollywood Reporter that the success was driven by both production quality and the passion of anime fans. He noted that the US$70 million opening in three days far exceeded expectations, adding, “It’s now undeniable how big anime has become.”

Beyond Niche Culture

The film’s popularity highlights anime’s expanding audience. Once considered a subculture, anime now attracts diverse viewers across age groups and geographies. Repeat viewings and strong word-of-mouth suggest anime films now occupy the same cultural space as global hits.

Sony executives see Infinity Castle as validation that anime is not just a side project anymore. With two more films planned in the Infinity Castle trilogy, expectations are high.

What Does It Mean?

The success signals a larger shift: anime is no longer a regional phenomenon but a global cultural force. It shows that major anime arcs may increasingly debut as cinematic events rather than television seasons, creating shared global experiences.

However, challenges remain: piracy, localisation, and the high bar for sequels, but the message is clear. Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle has proven that anime can rival Hollywood franchises in both box office power and cultural reach.
