South Africa Name Rubin Hermann As Dewald Brevis’ Replacement

South Africa have been forced into an early change in their ODI squad against Pakistan, as the Dewald Brevis was ruled out with a shoulder injury earlier this week. In his place, the Proteas have now called up left-handed batter Rubin Hermann, a name that might not be familiar to many fans but comes with serious domestic credentials.

Hermann Steps In for Injured Brevis

Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed the news on Thursday, announcing that Hermann has been drafted in for the remaining two ODIs of the three-match series.

“North West Dragons batter Rubin Hermann has been named as Dewald Brevis’ replacement for the remainder of the One-Day International series against Pakistan,” CSA said in a statement.

For those who follow South Africa’s domestic circuit, Hermann’s name carries weight. The 28-year-old has piled up 1,699 runs in 41 List A matches at an average close to 50, including six centuries and as many fifties, impressive numbers that speak volumes about his consistency.

While Hermann has featured in six T20 internationals for South Africa, this call-up gives him a chance to make his long-awaited ODI debut.

The left-hander is known for his clean stroke play and ability to anchor innings, something the Proteas could use as they look to bounce back in the series.

Brevis’ Injury a Setback for Proteas

The news, however, is a major blow for South Africa. Dewald Brevis, fondly called ‘Baby AB’ for his uncanny resemblance to AB de Villiers’ batting style, injured his shoulder muscle during the third T20I against Pakistan at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore last week.

Scans revealed a low-grade strain, ruling him out of the ODI leg of the tour. Although he’ll stay with the squad to continue his rehab under the medical team, the timing of the injury couldn’t have been worse.

Before the setback, Brevis had featured in all matches across formats on this tour, with his best performance being a fighting 54 in the second innings of the Lahore Test. However, his ODI record remains underwhelming so far, just 110 runs in six games, with a top score of 49.

South Africa Aim to Level the Series

With Brevis sidelined, South Africa trail 1-0 in the three-match ODI series after losing the opener in Faisalabad. The Proteas will be desperate to hit back and keep the series alive when they face Pakistan again at the same venue later today.
