The defending champions, India, outplayed New Zealand in every department to clinch the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Sunday. Their commanding 96-run victory not only secured the trophy but also placed them firmly in the history books.

With the win, India became the first team ever to win three men’s T20 World Cup titles and, just as importantly, the first side to successfully defend the trophy.

India’s Top Order Sets the Tone

India’s dominance began with the bat. After being asked to bat first, the hosts showed their intent early and never eased off the accelerator.

The top order fired in unison as Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan all struck half-centuries to power India to a formidable 255 for 5 in 20 overs.

Samson led the charge with a blistering 89 off just 46 deliveries. His innings featured eight towering sixes and five crisp boundaries, and he kept the scoreboard ticking with effortless strokeplay.

Meanwhile, Kishan provided solid support with a fluent 54, while Sharma added 52 at the top of the order. The trio ensured that India maintained pressure throughout the innings and left New Zealand with a mountain to climb.

Bumrah Leads India’s Bowling

Chasing 256 in a World Cup final was always going to be a daunting task, and India’s bowlers made sure the challenge became even tougher.

The Kiwi batting line-up struggled to keep pace with the required rate against a disciplined and relentless attack.

Tim Seifert tried to mount a counterattack with a lively 52 off 26 balls, smashing five sixes and two fours. However, he found little support at the other end.

Mitchell Santner fought hard for his 43, while Daryl Mitchell added 17, but the rest of the batting line-up faltered. Eventually, New Zealand were bowled out for 159 in 19 overs.

Jasprit Bumrah led the bowling charge brilliantly. The fast bowler dismantled the middle order with figures of 4 for 15 in his four overs.

Axar Patel also played a key role by picking up three wickets, while Varun Chakravarthy and Hardik Pandya chipped in with one wicket each to wrap up the innings.

Samson’s Fairytale Run

If there was one player who embodied India’s campaign, it was Sanju Samson.

Interestingly, the wicketkeeper-batter did not even feature in three of India’s four group-stage matches against the USA, Pakistan and the Netherlands. However, once he returned to the side, he made every opportunity count.

Although he managed only 24 against Zimbabwe in the Super Eights, Samson soon found his rhythm. He produced a match-winning, unbeaten 97 against West Indies in a tense run chase, which effectively acted as a quarter-final.

From there, he never looked back. Samson followed it up with a half-century in the semi-final against England in Mumbai and then produced another explosive knock in the final against New Zealand.

Those three consecutive half-centuries placed him in an elite club, as he became only the third player to achieve the feat in a men’s T20 World Cup.

By the end of the tournament, Samson had amassed 321 runs in just five innings. Even more impressive was his remarkable average of 199.37 and a strike rate that matched the same number.

Unsurprisingly, his performances earned him the prestigious Player of the Tournament award, beating strong competition from players like Sahibzada Farhan, Aiden Markram, Lungi Ngidi, Will Jacks, Rachin Ravindra, Tim Seifert and Shadley van Schalkwyk.
