Pakistan has embarked on a historic voyage, setting sail toward a new era of sea travel. The federal government has licensed the internationally recognised Sea Keepers to manage the country’s first-ever international ferry service.

This offers the Pakistani diaspora a more scenic, affordable, and convenient route to Iran and the Gulf Countries.

What Do We Know About Pakistan’s First International Ferry?

Pakistan has been looking to capitalise on its geostrategic position, and sailing into maritime travel is a significant step towards that end.

Initial operations, managed by Sea Keepers Private Limited, will begin from well-developed ports in Karachi and Gwadar. The new ferry routes will link Pakistan to Iran, Oman, and other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations.

Expansion of routes is expected based on future demands and bilateral agreements. However, an official date of commencement of operations is yet to be announced.

What Does International Ferry Travel Mean for the Pakistani Diaspora?

The international ferry is expected to support thousands of Pakistanis who travel to Iran annually for religious pilgrimage. Many of these pilgrims used to rely on air travel.

However, sea travel is much cheaper. Rising ticket fares have already driven air travel beyond the means of the average Pakistani. Thus, the ferry provides a convenient alternative that lessens reliance on air and land routes.

In addition to affordability, sea travel offers a scenic route, giving trave an enjoyable experience. Logically, the relaxed atmosphere and setting could boost tourism avenues too.

By providing a sea route between Pakistan and several nations, including Iran and the Gulf countries, the ferry has facilitated important means of regional cooperation and trade.

The initiative is a statement of connectivity and a symbol of progress. By sea, Pakistan can bridge cultural, religious, and economic ties across the Arabian Gulf, while providing its citizens with a more affordable and eco-friendly mode of transportation.
