After battling pancreatic cancer, Judge Frank Caprio, longtime Chief Judge of the Providence Municipal Court and star of Caught in Providence, died at 88. He gained worldwide attention for his sympathetic approach to justice. He was born on November 24, 1936, in Providence, Rhode Island, to Italian immigrants Antonio and Filomena Caprio.
Caprio graduated from Providence College in 1958 and earned his law degree from Suffolk University Law School while teaching high school. He began his career in private practice and served on the Providence City Council from 1962 to 1968. In 1985, he became Chief Judge of the Providence Municipal Court and continued until his retirement in 2023.
His courtroom became famous through Caught in Providence, which started on local television before expanding nationally and online. The show’s viral clips showed his fairness and empathy when handling minor offences. Millions of people around the world admired his decisions and his compassionate style.

Caprio also chaired the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education. He created several scholarships for students at Providence College, Suffolk University, and other schools. He received many honorary degrees and entered the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce, and their five children, including Frank T. Caprio, former Rhode Island General Treasurer. His family said they hope others will honour his legacy of kindness and compassion through their good deeds.
