Over the years, several Pakistani stars have shone in their own stellar moments on the red carpet at Cannes.

From historic film premieres to glamorous fashion debuts, every Pakistani celebrity at Cannes has arrived with more than just style. They brought Pakistani cinema, fashion, and storytelling to one of the world’s biggest cultural stages.

Here’s a look at the stars who proudly represented Pakistan at Cannes through the years.

1. Mahira Khan (2018 & 2019)

Mahira Khan changed the game for Pakistani celebrities at Cannes. In 2018, she became the first Pakistani actress to officially represent L’Oréal Paris at the festival.

The superstar stunned audiences in an elegant black Alberta Ferretti gown and quickly became one of the most photographed South Asian celebrities at the event. Mahira’s appearance placed a Pakistani celebrity at Cannes firmly into global fashion conversations.

In 2019, she returned with even more confidence and stronger international attention. Her appearances signalled a major shift for Pakistani representation in luxury beauty and fashion campaigns.

2. The Joyland Cast (2022)

2022 was a pretty historic year for Pakistani cinema. Saim Sadiq’s Joyland became the first Pakistani feature film selected for Cannes’ prestigious Un Certain Regard section.

The cast included:

  • Sarwat Gilani
  • Sania Saeed
  • Alina Khan
  • Ali Junejo
  • Rasti Farooq

Each actor brought visibility to a new era of Pakistani storytelling. Alina Khan, in particular, made headlines as the first Pakistani transgender actor to walk the Cannes red carpet. The success of Joyland turned every member of the cast into a globally recognised star.

3. Armeena Rana Khan (2013)

Before Cannes became a regular conversation in Pakistani entertainment circles, it was Armeena Rana Khan who made history in 2013.

The actress attended the festival for the British short film Writhe, directed by Sheraz Ali. She later revealed that another project, Stranger Within Me, was also selected during her Cannes journey.

Armeena described the experience as surreal, especially while sharing spaces with names like Steven Spielberg and Nicole Kidman. Her appearance helped open doors for future Pakistani actors on international platforms.

4. Bakhtawar Mazhar (2023)

In 2023, Pakistani psychological horror film In Flames earned a place in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight sidebar.

Lead actress Bakhtawar Mazhar attended the festival for the film’s world premiere. Her appearance was proof of Pakistan’s growing strength in independent and experimental cinema. Unlike traditional commercial films, In Flames tackled topics like fear, trauma, and womanhood through a morbid storytelling lens.

5. Adnan Siddiqui (2008)

Many fans do not realise Adnan Siddiqui was among the earliest Pakistani actors to attend Cannes.

Back in 2008, he appeared at the festival alongside Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt for the Hollywood film A Mighty Heart. The film was based on the life of journalist Daniel Pearl. Years before social media amplified celebrity appearances, Adnan represented Pakistan on one of cinema’s biggest global stages.

6. Sanam Saeed (2026)

Sanam Saeed is set to make one of the biggest Pakistani appearances at Cannes in 2026. The actress will attend as the inaugural honoree of Us Studios’ “South Asian Women Excellence in Cinema & Arts” initiative.

However, her trip goes beyond fashion and photography. Sanam plans to spotlight Pakistani women working behind the scenes in television and film. She will also pay tribute to legendary cinema icon Shamim Ara during the festival.

Her debut represents a deeply meaningful cultural milestone. For many fans, seeing another Pakistani celebrity at Cannes feels like a proud reminder of how far the industry has come.

Styled by Danish Maqsood, Roma’s wardrobe blends traditional Pakistani fashion with modern silhouettes. She has also spoken openly about challenging colourism, beauty standards, and conversations surrounding women’s empowerment. Her appearance is expected to place Pakistani fashion and identity into major international conversations.
