Late Wednesday, Atlanta authorities reported that Brent Hinds died in a motorcycle accident. At 11:35 p.m., police discovered him unconscious at a crossroad two miles from downtown Atlanta. He was 51.
According to reports, Hinds appeared to be riding a Harley-Davidson when a BMW SUV failed to yield while turning left. As a result, the SUV hit his bike. Consequently, emergency personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
Meanwhile, police confirmed that an investigation is still underway. They are examining the cause of the collision and determining who was at fault.
William Brent Hinds co-founded the Atlanta heavy metal band Mastodon in 2000. In addition, he served as the lead guitarist and one of the group’s three singers.
Over the years, the band gained fame with albums such as Remission (2002), Leviathan (2004), and Blood Mountain (2007). Due to their inventive and bold sound, critics widely praised them. Notably, Leviathan was a concept album inspired by Moby-Dick.
Mastodon won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance with Emperor of Sand (2017). Hinds played a major creative role on that record, further cementing his influence.
However, Hinds and the band split in March 2025. Although Mastodon called it a “mutual decision,” Hinds later claimed he had been kicked out. At the time, he even referred to his former bandmates as “horrible people.”
In a heartfelt tribute, Mastodon wrote: “We are in a condition of almost unimaginable sorrow and loss… Last night, Brent Hinds died from a disastrous mishap. Still reeling from the loss of this creative power, we are grief-stricken, stunned, and still attempting to understand. Brent’s family, friends, and admirers have our hearts’ grief. We kindly request you respect everyone’s privacy during this trying period at this point.”
Hinds was born on Jan. 16, 1974, in Birmingham, Alabama. For one year, he took classical guitar lessons. Later, seeking music opportunities, he relocated to Atlanta in the mid-1990s and eventually co-founded Mastodon.
After leaving Mastodon, he continued to perform with other Atlanta bands. Even until his tragic passing, he remained active and deeply engaged in the music industry.
