Is It Really That Embarrassing to Get Caught Using ChatGPT?

Every now and then, you see it happen. Someone shares a perfectly structured essay or a strangely formal LinkedIn post and the first reaction is a teasing comment: “This must be ChatGPT.” The joke lands because there is an unspoken rule.

Using AI is still perceived as something somewhat underhanded. Something you should probably hide. But should it really feel embarrassing?

The Stigma of “Cheating” With ChatGPT

Much of the discomfort stems from how people perceive ChatGPT. In schools and offices, it often gets described as a shortcut, almost like copying homework.

Yet history shows that new tools often go through this stage of suspicion. When calculators were first introduced in classrooms, some teachers argued that students would never learn real math.

Even spellcheck was once questioned for making people lazy. Today, no one would think twice about using any of these.

But why do people turn to it?

If you strip away the judgment, the reasons people use ChatGPT are surprisingly ordinary. It helps people articulate their thoughts clearly. It saves time when you are overloaded with emails or reports.

The Quiet Double Standard

The same people who laugh at others for using ChatGPT often use it themselves. They just do not say so. It feels similar to the early days of dating apps.

Everyone was using them, but most people still pretended they had met “naturally” at a bookstore or a coffee shop. The tool itself was fine. The shame was only in admitting it.

Soon enough, using ChatGPT will probably feel no different from opening Google. The real risk is not in being “caught” but in leaning on it without adding your own touch. That is when the writing feels robotic. That is when your own voice disappears. AI is not at its best when it speaks for you.

So, Is It Embarrassing?

The honest answer is that it does not have to be. ChatGPT is already deeply ingrained in the way people think and work. It is not a secret weapon or a guilty pleasure. It is simply a tool. What matters is whether you use it with thought or not.

However, remember not to be too dependent on it, as it strips away Earth’s resources and undermines our critical thinking skills.
