In a historic moment in football, Curaçao FIFA World Cup Qualification has officially made the tiny Caribbean island the smallest nation by population to reach the FIFA World Cup finals.

With just over 156,000 people, Curaçao broke Iceland’s record set in 2018, cementing one of football’s most remarkable underdog stories.

Since joining FIFA in 2010, Curaçao has rapidly risen to the global stage, showcasing discipline, resilience, and tactical acumen under veteran Dutch manager Dick Advocaat.

The team went unbeaten through the qualification campaign, dominating early rounds and the final stage.

The campaign saw standout performances, including a 7-0 victory over Bermuda, which strengthened their goal difference and boosted confidence.

Curaçao’s squad skillfully combined experienced diaspora players with passionate homegrown talent, producing a balance that outclassed regional rivals.

The decisive moment came in Kingston against Jamaica. Needing only a draw to secure World Cup qualification, Curaçao faced intense pressure throughout the match.

Jamaica hit the woodwork three times and were awarded a penalty in stoppage time, but VAR overturned the decision, confirming Curaçao’s historic qualification and sparking wild celebrations from players and fans alike.

Curaçao’s qualification is more than a sporting achievement, it serves as inspiration for smaller nations, proving that with structure, belief, and leadership, even tiny countries can compete at the highest level.

The team, known as the Blue Wave, is now officially heading to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ready to compete among football’s elite.
