Olivia Rodrigo is back with another emotional tangle of music notes. The pop star has officially released ‘the cure,’ a haunting new single paired with a visually unique music video that blends heartbreak with medicine.

Produced by longtime collaborator Dan Nigro, the track arrives ahead of Rodrigo’s highly anticipated third album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, due on June 12.

Olivia Rodrigo Turns a Hospital into a Heartbreak Metaphor

In the music video, directed by Cat Solen and Jamie Gerin, Olivia Rodrigo plays a vintage-style nurse desperately trying to repair broken hearts inside a midcentury hospital.

However, the story quickly twists. Instead of healing everyone else, Rodrigo’s character slowly unravels and ultimately becomes the patient herself. The viewer gets to witness as blood-red yarn spirals its way out of Rodrigo, and she flails around to gain some control. Desperation and dejection are interwoven throughout the video as she runs through hospital halls, gets X-Rays where her heart is visible, and lies in bed attached to six other beating hearts.

The visual perfectly mirrors the song’s vulnerable lyrics. Rodrigo leans into themes of anxiety, self-doubt, and emotional exhaustion.

“My head is full of poison, and my heart is full of doubt,” she sings. “And it feels like medication… But it doesn’t matter how your love feels anymore. It’ll never be the cure.”

Why ‘the cure’ Matters to Olivia Rodrigo’s New Album

Rodrigo isn’t treating this release like just another single. She recently described ‘the cure’ as the “thesis statement” of her upcoming album, explaining that the song helped the entire record fall into place.

The new project follows Drop Dead, whose lavish video famously showed Rodrigo dancing across the walls of Versailles. Meanwhile, fans also got a surprise preview during her recent Saturday Night Live appearance, where she debuted the unreleased track Begged alongside Natalie Mering of Weyes Blood.

The Cure Connection Fans Can’t Ignore

The title may spark confusion, but no, this is not a song by The Cure. However, the connection runs deeper than fans might expect.

Olivia Rodrigo has always been a huge fan of the band, crediting The Cure’s influence on her music. Last year, she performed “Just Like Heaven” and “Friday, I’m in Love” live with Robert Smith at Glastonbury. She has also called The Cure’s “Love Song” one of her favourite songs ever.

That admiration even slips into her songwriting. Her earlier single Drop Dead references The Cure through the lyric: “You know all the words to ‘Just Like Heaven’.”

What’s Next for Olivia Rodrigo?

With a new album arriving in June and the Unravelled Tour kicking off later this year, Olivia Rodrigo is entering another massive career chapter. The tour will feature support from acts including Wolf Alice and Grace Ives.

If ‘the cure’ is any indication, Rodrigo will be taking emotion and elevating it through theatrics, fresh aesthetics, soulful vocals and earnest lyrics.
