Football fever officially hits Pakistan as Islamabad hosted its first-ever countdown ceremony for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where diplomats, sports officials, government officials, and football fans were brought together under one roof.

The special event was held at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, in partnership with the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF). The ceremony was attended by over 150 guests, who were present to witness the growing prominence of football in Pakistan and the country’s contribution to the sport that is loved by people around the world.

Pakistan Steps into the FIFA World Cup Spotlight

The upcoming FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. It will also become the biggest tournament in football history, featuring 48 national teams for the first time.

U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker called the event a historic moment for Pakistan. She also praised Sialkot’s football manufacturing industry, which continues to produce world-class footballs used internationally.

“President Trump has underscored that the 2026 FIFA World Cup is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase the beauty and greatness of America,” Baker said during the ceremony.

She further described the tournament as the beginning of an “American Decade of Sport,” with the United States preparing to host several major sporting events, including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

A Celebration of Football and Diplomacy

The event welcomed prominent personalities from Pakistan’s political and sporting circles. Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi, PFF President Syed Mohsen Gilani, Rana Mashood Ahmad Khan, and Lahore Qalandars CEO Atif Rana were among the notable attendees.

One of the evening’s most stellar highlights was the unveiling of an oversized football manufactured in Sialkot by Forward Sports. Guests also took part in a friendly penalty-kick challenge once the formal ceremony wrapped up.

Meanwhile, Coca-Cola honoured two female Pakistan national football players during the event, shedding a much-needed spotlight on women’s football in the country.

PFF Sees Growing Excitement Across Pakistan

Speaking at the ceremony, PFF President Syed Mohsen Gilani said excitement around the FIFA World Cup is building across Pakistan despite the national team not qualifying for the tournament.

“The euphoria will reach fever pitch when the World Cup kicks off,” Gilani said. “The United States will prove itself as an exemplary host.”

He also pointed to key milestones that were achieved by Pakistan football recently, including:

  • Pakistan women’s football team is participating in a FIFA event for the first time
  • A historic victory by the women’s side
  • Appointment of the first-ever woman manager for Pakistan’s men’s national football team
  • Increased international engagement through football diplomacy

Gilani emphasised that football continues to act as a uniting force for people beyond cultures and politics.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino Sends Special Message

FIFA President Gianni Infantino also shared a video message during the event. He praised Pakistan’s growing football culture and appreciated the reforms introduced under PFF leadership.

“If this visionary leadership continues, Pakistan football can achieve extraordinary progress,” Infantino said.

As the countdown to the FIFA World Cup officially begins, Pakistan appears ready to embrace football’s biggest celebration with unmatched enthusiasm. From Sialkot’s football factories to packed screening events across cities, the sport’s popularity is clearly reaching new heights.
