Asia Cup 2025: India’s Hollow Victory Without the Trophy

The dust has settled on the ACC Men’s T20 Asia Cup 2025. India walked away as champions but without the trophy. After a thrilling five-wicket win over Pakistan in Dubai, clinching their ninth Asia Cup title, the Men in Blue’s refusal to accept the trophy has shifted the focus from the game.

What should have been remembered as a historic final will now forever be overshadowed by controversy, a night where sportsmanship was left behind and the “gentlemen’s game” found itself dragged into political mud.

A Rivalry That Lost Its Spirit

Cricket between India and Pakistan has never been just about runs and wickets. Over decades, the sport has often carried the weight of politics, but what unfolded in this Asia Cup was unprecedented.

From the start, the tournament was marred by players refusing to shake hands, exchanging taunts, and injecting political messaging into their performances.

By the time the final arrived, the game was no longer just about cricket. It was about making statements. And sadly, the biggest statement came after the last ball was bowled.

The Trophy That Wasn’t

India won the final in the last over, sparking wild celebrations. But when the time came for the presentation, chaos took over. The champions refused to accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Mohsin Naqvi, who also serves as PCB chairman and Pakistan’s interior minister.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia openly admitted the team had decided against receiving the trophy from Naqvi, stating:

“We have decided not to take the Asia Cup trophy from the ACC chairman, who happens to be one of the main [political] leaders of Pakistan.”

What followed was farcical. The presentation was delayed by almost an hour, with Naqvi seen in animated discussions on the ground. Eventually, the actual trophy was quietly removed from the stage.

When the ceremony finally began, only the individual awards were handed out, while Pakistan captain Salman Agha collected the runners-up cheque. The presenter, Simon Doull, then dropped the bombshell:

“I have been informed by the Asian Cricket Council that the Indian cricket team will not be collecting their awards tonight.”

Celebrating With an “Imaginary” Trophy

In what will now become one of cricket’s strangest images, India celebrated their title by lifting an invisible trophy on the podium. Players huddled together, laughed, and raised their arms as if holding the silverware that never touched their hands.

At the press conference, captain Suryakumar Yadav expressed disappointment, saying:

“I feel we deserved it. If you tell me about trophies, my trophies are sitting in the dressing room, all the 14 guys with me, the support staff, those are the real trophies.”

He insisted the decision not to accept the cup was entirely the team’s, not forced upon them by the board or government.

Where Does Cricket Go From Here?

Let’s be clear, this was unprecedented. Never before has a champion side refused its trophy, and in doing so, India may have crossed a line. By snubbing the ceremony, they not only disrespected the tournament but also violated the spirit of cricket and, arguably, the ICC code of conduct.

What should have been remembered as the first-ever India vs Pakistan Asia Cup final will now be etched in memory for all the wrong reasons. The victory feels hollow, not because of the cricket, but because the true essence of the sport was lost somewhere between politics and pride.
