A meeting of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will be held in Quetta today (Thursday) to sight the moon for Muharramul Haram 1447 Hijri. Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad, Chairman of the committee, will lead the session. Zonal Ruet-e-Hilal Committees will also meet at their local headquarters for the same purpose.
The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) earlier predicted that the crescent for Muharram 1447 will likely be sighted on the evening of June 26. If sighted, the first day of Muharram and the new Hijri will begin on June 27.
According to Suparcoโs statement, the moon is expected to be born on June 25 at 3:32 PM. At sunset on June 26, the moon will be approximately 28 hours and 15 minutes old. This age increases the chances of moon visibility that evening.
The statement added, โAn expected duration between the sunset and the moonset at coastal areas will be 75 minutes.โ
Suparco confirmed, โThis duration will provide sufficient window for sighting of the Muharramul Haram moon.โ
Based on the expected moon sighting, Youm-e-Ashur (10th Muharram) is likely to fall on July 6 in Pakistan. The meeting results today will confirm the Islamic calendar for the start of the new year.
The decision from todayโs meetings by both the central and zonal committees will officially mark the beginning of the sacred month of Muharram. Any update will be based on actual moon sighting reports from different parts of the country.
