Artificial intelligence is changing how businesses work, and software companies are now being forced to rethink how they charge for their products. Experts say companies which use AI to update their pricing and value systems will stay ahead, while others could fall behind over time.

Big AI players like OpenAI and Anthropic are building the base technology that powers many new tools. At the same time, smaller AI apps are solving very specific problems in areas like customer service and legal work. But the real pressure is on older software companies that already dominate the market.

Old Pricing Models Under Pressure

Most traditional software companies use subscription pricing, where customers pay a fixed fee every month or year. Now, AI is pushing the industry toward usage-based pricing, where users pay depending on how much they actually use.

Some companies are already trying to adjust. For example, GitHub added AI tools like Copilot and started shifting toward usage-based billing. This shows how even big companies are changing their old systems to fit the new AI world.

Still, the change is not simple. Many older companies are stuck with billing systems which are built only for subscriptions. These systems often struggle to track real usage properly, which can lead to billing mistakes and lost revenue.

New Risks and New Solutions

Experts warn that these problems can lead to revenue leakage, which means companies fail to charge correctly for services they have already provided. It can also create a poor customer experience and slow down new product launches.

So, because of this, many companies are now shifting towards hybrid pricing. This combines a fixed subscription fee with usage-based charges, giving both stability and flexibility.

And then instead of rebuilding everything, experts say that companies should upgrade their existing systems with better tools that can track usage more accurately.

AI is also changing how internal teams work. Marketing, sales and support teams can now use real usage data to make better and smarter decisions.

In the end, experts believe software companies must adapt quickly to this new AI-driven world, or they risk falling behind in a fast-changing market.
