Bangladesh cricket has entered a new chapter, and it comes with a familiar face at the helm. Former captain Tamim Iqbal has been appointed as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), marking a significant shift in the country’s cricketing landscape.
At just 37, Tamim is now the youngest chief in the board’s history. However, his appointment is not just about age or legacy. It comes at a time when the board is dealing with serious questions about governance and credibility.
A Board Dissolved, A Fresh Start
The decision follows the dissolution of the previous board led by Aminul Islam. This move was not sudden, though. It came after a five-member investigation committee reviewed allegations surrounding last year’s BCB elections.
The findings painted a concerning picture. According to officials, the board was not formed properly and struggled to function effectively. As a result, the government stepped in.
Speaking on the matter, National Sports Council director Mohammed Aminul Ahesan confirmed that the decision had already been communicated to the International Cricket Council. Authorities now expect the ICC to support the move.
A Turbulent Backdrop
It is important to understand the context behind this change. The BCB has been under pressure for months.
Questions were raised over the validity of the previous elections. Moreover, the national team’s absence from a recent T20 World Cup only added to the scrutiny. Allegations of political interference and favouritism further complicated matters.
On top of that, multiple resignations weakened the board internally. Six directors stepped down since January, including four in just the past week. Clearly, the situation had reached a breaking point.
Tamim’s Team
Tamim will not be working alone. He will lead an 11-member ad-hoc committee, which includes notable names such as Minhajul Abedin and Athar Ali Khan.
The rest of the committee features a mix of administrators and professionals, signalling an attempt to bring balance and fresh thinking into the system.
For now, the task is clear. Stabilise the board, restore trust, and prepare for a more structured future.
For Tamim, this is a very different challenge. He is widely regarded as one of Bangladesh’s greatest cricketers, having played nearly 400 international matches and leading the team to memorable victories.
Interestingly, he had initially planned to contest the BCB elections last year but withdrew, citing concerns over abuse of power. Now, he returns to the system in a far more influential role.
