The Pakistan Super League’s newest franchise, Sialkot Stallionz, have reportedly secured the services of former Australia captain Steve Smith ahead of PSL 11.
This is a direct signing, done before the PSL’s first-ever player auction scheduled for Wednesday, 11 February.
The PSL has always attracted big overseas names, but Steve Smith in PSL colours would be a different kind of headline. Not only because of his stature, but also because he has never played in the league before.
The direct signing that changes everything
According to reliable sources, Sialkot Stallionz have signed Smith directly under PSL 11 regulations.
Under the updated rules, each franchise is allowed one direct signing of a foreign player who did not feature in PSL 10. That clause appears tailor-made for ambitious franchises, and it looks like Sialkot has wasted no time in using it.
In simple words, while the rest of the league is preparing for the auction drama, Sialkot may have already landed one of the most accomplished batters of this generation.
And if this gets officially confirmed, it instantly changes the vibe of PSL 11.
Sialkot Stallionz: the most expensive franchise
Sialkot Stallionz were officially introduced as one of the two new PSL teams, and their ownership rights were acquired by OZ Developers, owned by Hamza Majeed and Kamil Khan, during the historic PSL 2026 franchise auction held at the Jinnah Convention Centre on 8 January.
OZ Developers sealed the deal with a record bid of Rs 1.85 billion, making it the most expensive franchise purchase in PSL history.
So from day one, the Stallionz have carried a “premium” tag. But premium price only matters if you deliver premium ambition.
And signing Steve Smith would be exactly that.
The Australian blueprint
The Stallionz owners have been openly talking about bringing an Australian mindset into Pakistan cricket. They already backed that talk by appointing former Australia wicketkeeper-batter Tim Paine as their head coach.
Now, sources suggest Smith will play under Paine, his former international teammate, in PSL 11.
It is a fascinating link because both Paine and Smith made their Test debuts in the same match against Pakistan in 2010. Fast forward to 2026, and you could have Smith playing PSL under Paine’s coaching in Pakistan.
Smith’s PSL debut would be huge
We have seen plenty of Australian stars come and go in the league, but Smith’s name has always been missing from that list. So if Sialkot manage to bring him in for PSL 11, it becomes a genuine headline moment for the tournament itself, not just for one franchise.
And honestly, the PSL could use that buzz as it enters its next phase with eight teams.
Notably, some people still associate Smith with red-ball greatness, and fair enough, he is a modern-day giant in Tests. But the key point here is that he is not coming in as a “big name for marketing”.
He is coming in with form. Smith enjoyed a sensational run in the recently concluded Big Bash League (BBL) season 15, where he played for Sydney Sixers and looked like a man batting in fast-forward.
He played six matches, scoring 299 runs at an average of 59.80 and a strike rate of 167.97, including a stunning 42-ball century.
Overall, Smith has played 272 T20 matches, scoring 6,242 runs at an average of 32.68 and a strike rate of 131.38, including five centuries and 30 half-centuries.
So even if someone wants to question his fit in franchise cricket, the stats answer that debate instantly.
