One of the biggest talking points ahead of the Big Bash League (BBL) 15 has finally been put to rest. Cricket Australia (CA) chief executive Todd Greenberg has confirmed that Pakistan’s marquee players will remain available for the entire tournament, removing doubts that had been hanging over the league since the schedule was released.
With the BBL attracting some of Pakistan’s biggest names, the clarity will come as a relief to fans, franchises and broadcasters alike.
Clear Assurance From Cricket Australia
Speaking on the morning of the third Ashes Test at the Adelaide Oval, Greenberg revealed that Cricket Australia had received firm assurances regarding the availability of Pakistan players.
“We’ve been told that if they’ve been signed by the BBL, they’ll play the whole BBL,” Greenberg said.
That statement effectively puts an end to speculation surrounding Pakistan’s early January T20I tour of Sri Lanka, which had raised questions over whether players might leave the BBL midway through the season.
Big Names, Big Expectations
BBL 15 has welcomed a strong contingent of Pakistan’s first-choice cricketers. The list includes Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Rizwan, Shadab Khan, Haris Rauf and Hasan Ali, a line-up that promised fireworks from the very start.
However, the opening matches did not quite go to script for most of them.
Babar Azam, turning out for Sydney Sixers in the tournament opener against Perth Scorchers, had an off day and was dismissed for just two runs from five deliveries. It was not the start many expected from Pakistan’s premier batter.
A Forgettable Night for Rizwan and Shaheen
The second match of the season brought more frustration for Pakistan fans. Mohammad Rizwan, playing for Melbourne Renegades, struggled to get going and managed only four runs from ten balls.
On the other side, Shaheen Shah Afridi endured a particularly tough outing for the Brisbane Heat. Brought back into the attack late in the innings, the left-arm pacer lost his rhythm and bowled two waist-high no-balls in the same over. The umpires had no choice but to take him off the attack.
Shaheen ended up conceding 43 runs in just 2.4 overs, a disappointing return for a player who was the Heat’s first overseas pick in the BBL 15 draft.
Shadab Khan Shows the Way Forward
While others struggled, Shadab Khan offered a glimpse of what Pakistan’s stars can bring to the tournament. Making his return to the BBL with Sydney Thunder, Shadab made an immediate impact.
He struck a lively 34 from 24 balls and backed it up with two wickets, showcasing his value as a genuine all-rounder. Although his efforts were not enough to save Thunder from defeat against Hobart Hurricanes, his performance stood out as a positive sign.
