Sometimes, in Pakistan cricket, the real drama unfolds off the field. What started as a simple social media post quickly turned into a debate about fitness, selection and transparency. At the centre of it all was Fakhar Zaman, who has now finally spoken up to set the record straight. And in doing so, he may have calmed things down, at least for now.
How a single post sparked controversy?
It all began when former pacer Abdur Rouf shared a clip of Fakhar taking a sharp diving catch during a National T20 Cup match.
On the surface, it looked like a routine appreciation post. However, Rouf added a pointed remark, questioning how the selection committee had labelled Fakhar as injured just a day earlier.
The implication was clear. If Fakhar could dive around in the field, how could he be unfit for international cricket?
In typical fashion, the conversation picked up quickly online.

Fakhar responds with clarity
Instead of letting the speculation grow, Fakhar Zaman chose to respond directly. And his reply was simple, measured and important.
He explained that he was not fully fit for the demands of 50-over cricket at the time the ODI squad was selected. That, in itself, changes the entire narrative.
“Abdur Rouf Bhai, I was not 100% fit to play 50-over games,” Fakhar wrote.
He also revealed that he only returned to competitive cricket after clearing his fitness tests on the 15th. In other words, the timeline matters, and it supports the selectors’ original decision.
Interestingly, he even backed Aaqib Javed, stating that the call to leave him out was the right one.
To his credit, Abdur Rouf handled the response well. He acknowledged Fakhar’s explanation, praised his effort on the field and chose to delete his earlier post. More importantly, he reminded everyone that player welfare should always come first.
It was a rare moment of calm in what could have easily escalated further.
