Cunha Stars as Manchester United dent Arsenal Title Bid

Manchester United walked into north London on Sunday night at the Emirates Stadium as underdogs, yet walked out with a statement win that could shape the Premier League season.

Matheus Cunha’s stunning late strike sealed a breathless 3-2 victory and, in the process, handed Arsenal their first defeat in 13 games across all competitions.

Arsenal started the evening like a team chasing history. The pressure was relentless, the tempo high, and the Emirates buzzing. Eventually, that intensity paid off in the 29th minute, although not in the way United would have wanted.

Patrick Dorgu failed to deal with a cross, Bukayo Saka pounced, and after a scramble involving Martin Odegaard, Lisandro Martinez inadvertently turned the ball into his own net. It was messy, but Arsenal did not care.

However, that lead lasted just eight minutes. Out of nowhere, Arsenal gifted United a route back into the game.

Martin Zubimendi’s painfully short back pass was seized upon by Bryan Mbeumo, who calmly rounded David Raya and finished with confidence. Momentum swung instantly.

Dorgu Makes Amends in Style

If Dorgu was at fault for Arsenal’s opener, he more than made up for it after the break.

Five minutes into the second half, Bruno Fernandes spotted the 21-year-old in space. One touch. One look. One thunderous strike into the top corner from 20 yards. Silence swept across the Emirates as VAR checked and eventually allowed the goal to stand.

It was Dorgu’s second goal in successive matches and further proof that Michael Carrick’s decision to push him into a more advanced role is paying off.

Arsenal’s Late Hope

To their credit, Arsenal did not fold. With time slipping away, they found a lifeline in the 84th minute. A familiar weapon did the trick as Saka’s corner caused chaos, goalkeeper Lammens failed to hold on, and Mikel Merino bundled home from close range.

At that point, a draw felt inevitable. Yet football has a habit of tearing up scripts.

Just three minutes later, Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo combined to tee up Cunha. The Brazilian did the rest, unleashing a gorgeous drive from 25 yards that flew past Raya and into the corner. It was a goal worthy of winning any match, let alone one of this magnitude.

What This Means for the Title Race?

This defeat changes the mood around Arsenal. They are still top, but the cushion is shrinking fast. The Gunners now sit just four points clear of Manchester City and Aston Villa, both of whom won this weekend.

Pep Guardiola may have called Arsenal the best team in the world earlier this week, but three league games without a win have brought old anxieties back to the surface. Goalless draws against Liverpool and Nottingham Forest were warning signs. This loss felt louder.

Mikel Arteta, still chasing his first trophy since the 2020 FA Cup, knows all too well how fragile title races can be. Arsenal have been here before, only to stumble when it mattered most.

Carrick’s Dream Start Rolls On

For Manchester United, this was another chapter in a remarkable turnaround.

Michael Carrick has now beaten Manchester City and Arsenal in back-to-back weeks, lifting United into fourth place after a turbulent spell under Ruben Amorim. It was also United’s first win at the Emirates since December 2017.

Players like Mbeumo, Dorgu and Cunha are responding to Carrick’s trust, while Fernandes continues to pull the strings at key moments.

A Night Arsenal Will Not Forget

Arsenal still control their destiny, but this result will linger. The pressure is back. The margin for error is smaller. And the title race suddenly feels alive again.

As for United, they left north London with belief, momentum and a manager who looks increasingly at home on the biggest stage. Sometimes, one goal can change a season. Cunha’s might just do that.
