Over 109,000 Sites Blocked by PTA in FY2023-24

Under PECA, PTA has recently blocked more than 1.4 million sites to stop unlawful activities in the country. In the fiscal year 2023-24, 109,771 sites were banned. From these 35,365 sites, security and defence reasons were cited in 33,634 cases while 268 sites were suspended for blasphemy. Furthermore, 55,723 unethical sites and 3,618 communal or hate speech sites were closed. PTA also stated that 13,422 sites were used to promote religious sentiments in the last fiscal year, 1,058 sites were used for hosting offensive content, and 2,428 sites were used for other unlawful activities.

In another development, the PTA confiscated 25 illegal mobile booster sets during a raid. According to PTA, “PTA Zonal Office Karachi, in collaboration with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cyber Crime Circle Karachi, successfully conducted a raid against a retailer involved in the sale of illegal mobile boosters and amplifiers.” Meanwhile, PTA launched Cybersecurity Awareness Week 2024 from December 9 to 15. This was to encourage citizens and organizations to strengthen digital safety and follow legal guidelines under PECA 2016.
