Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran made history in the Champions Trophy with an incredible 177-run innings against England in Lahore. Not only did his innings lead Afghanistan to a strong total, but it also broke the record for the highest individual score in the history of the tournament. Previously, England’s Ben Duckett had the record to his name with 165 runs against Australia.

A Record-Breaking Innings

Walking in on top of Afghanistan’s early losses, Zadran attacked relentlessly with a counter-attack that wrecked the English bowling order. His calm and forceful 146-ball presence was filled with 12 boundaries and six colossal sixes, driving Afghanistan to 325/7 at the close of their 50 overs. His score surpassed the record Champions Trophy highest score, which just days before had been scored by Duckett.

Zadran’s record-breaking score wasn’t merely a personal best; it also became Afghanistan’s highest-ever tally in ICC ODI events, breaking their previous record of 291/5 against Australia in the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Furthermore, his 177 runs broke his own national record of 162, which was achieved against Sri Lanka in 2022.

Afghanistan’s Must-Win Encounter

The game was of huge importance to both sides, with England and Afghanistan having lost their first games of the tournament. Following a blistering opening by England’s pace attack leader Jofra Archer, Afghanistan was in trouble at 37/3. However, Zadran’s determination and aggressive stroke play changed the course of the game, providing his side with a fighting chance to remain in the semi-final hunt. His heroics were compared to some of the greatest innings in Champions Trophy history, putting him on par with cricketing legends Nathan Astle (145* against the USA in 2004) and Sourav Ganguly (141 against South Africa in 2000).
