A former Chief Marketing Officer of K-Electric, Mehreen Zehra, filed a complaint against the company’s CEO, Moonis Alvi. She accused him of harassment and mental distress during her consultancy engagement in 2019. The Provincial Ombudsman of Sindh, Justice (R) Shah Nawaz Tariq, handled the case.
After completing the investigation, the Ombudsman concluded that the allegations were true. He ordered Moonis Alvi to step down as CEO of K-Electric. In addition, he directed Alvi to pay a fine of Rs2.5 million within one month.
If Alvi fails to pay the fine, authorities will seize his movable and immovable assets. Moreover, his national identity card and passport may also face blockage. This ruling reflects one of the rare actions of corporate accountability in Pakistan.
Earlier this month, despite the ongoing case, K-Electric’s Board re-appointed Moonis Alvi. They made the decision in a meeting held on July 7, 2025. His new term was scheduled to start on July 30, 2025.
Moonis Alvi joined KE in 2008 and steadily rose through the ranks. Over the years, he served as CFO, Company Secretary, and Head of Treasury. The company appointed him CEO in 2018.
K-Electric, a publicly listed company, began its operations in 1913 under the name KESC. The government privatised it in 2005. Today, KE supplies electricity to Karachi and nearby areas as the only vertically integrated utility in Pakistan.
Currently, KES Power holds 66.4% of KE’s shares. The investor group includes Al-Jomaih Power Limited of Saudi Arabia, National Industries Group of Kuwait, and KE Holdings (formerly IGCF). Meanwhile, the Government of Pakistan owns 24.36%, and the rest of the shares are publicly floated.
This case brings attention to the importance of ethics in the workplace. It also demonstrates the increasing willingness of regulatory bodies to hold corporate leaders accountable.
