T-Mobile will introduce its Starlink-based “T‑Satellite” service on July 23, 2025, after several months of beta testing. The service introduces satellite messaging to smartphones nationwide.
Messaging at Launch
At launch, users can send and receive SMS on Android and iOS. Android users will also receive MMS support for images and short audio messages. Support for iOS MMS will arrive after.
T-Satellite messaging will be complimentary with T-Mobile’s “Experience Beyond” plan. It will be $10/month for others, including non-T-Mobile customers.
Data Arrives in October
T-Mobile will launch low-bandwidth satellite data on October 1, 2025. The feature will have support for chosen apps like WhatsApp, AccuWeather, AllTrails, and more. The carrier also has plans to support third-party apps through dedicated developer tools.
T‑Satellite is based on more than 657 Starlink satellites. It will reach over 500,000 square miles, places where regular cell towers can’t.
Since late 2024 when beta started, more than 1.8 million users have enrolled. Many of them are from AT&T and Verizon.
Device Compatibility
Most smartphones produced in the last four years will be compatible with T‑Satellite. Both Android and iOS devices will work. Samsung Galaxy phones from S21 and later, and Z Flip and Fold lines are included.
T-Mobile announced that satellite 911 texting would be offered to all customers in the latter part of 2025. This extends to non-T-Mobile customers.
Why it Matters
T-Mobile is the first US carrier to combine cell and satellite coverage. The service functions without additional hardware or special antennas. Phones automatically connect when towers are out.
This drives connectivity to rural regions, especially in times of natural disasters. It also might push application creators to enable satellite use.
What’s Next?
Following MMS and initial data deployment, T-Mobile has voice calling by late 2026 on deck. It will also introduce greater application compatibility and add-on services.
T‑Satellite represents a huge change in cellular coverage. Residents in outlying or disaster areas have assured access. The $10/month plan makes it available to nearly everyone. The full data service and emergency assistance will come later.
