South Africa’s Tazmin Brits has rewritten history books on Monday as the 34-year-old opener smashed her fifth ODI hundred of 2025, setting a new world record for the most centuries scored by a woman in a single calendar year.
The milestone came during South Africa’s dominant win over New Zealand in their ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 clash in Indore on Sunday.
Brits’ Fifth Ton Seals a Historic Year
Chasing 232, Brits walked out alongside Laura Wolvaardt with calm assurance. When Wolvaardt departed early in the third over, the pressure was on. But Brits, as she’s done all year, didn’t flinch.
She built a commanding partnership with Sune Luus, steering South Africa to safety after their previous collapse against England, when they had been bowled out for just 69.
Brits reached her seventh career ODI hundred, and fifth of 2025, off just 87 balls in the 31st over. Her fluent knock of 101 off 93 deliveries included 15 fours and a six, a mix of elegance and controlled aggression.
With that, she overtook India’s Smriti Mandhana, who had previously held the record with four centuries in both 2024 and 2025.
Consistency at Its Peak
If one number sums up Tazmin Brits’ current form, it’s 749, her total runs in 11 ODIs this year at a stunning average of 83.22. Her recent scores make for a jaw-dropping sequence: 101, 101, 171, 5, and 101**.
She’s now scored 1,525 runs in 41 ODIs at an average of 39.10, including seven centuries and two fifties. She also holds the record for the most ODI hundreds by a woman after turning 30, further highlighting her incredible late-career rise.
What’s more, Brits is now the fastest woman to reach seven ODI tons, achieving it in fewer innings than Australia’s Meg Lanning, who took 44 knocks to reach the mark.
A Story of Comeback and Courage
Brits’ journey to the top isn’t just about cricket, it’s about resilience. Before she became South Africa’s batting powerhouse, Brits was a talented javelin thrower, even winning gold at the Junior World Championships.
She was on course to represent her country at the 2012 London Olympics, but a car accident tragically derailed her athletics career.
Instead of fading away, she found a new home in cricket. Over a decade later, she’s not only representing her country but rewriting the sport’s record books.
