South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol Impeached by Parliament

Published on

South Korea’s parliament voted on Saturday to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol, suspending him from official responsibilities after his controversial attempt to establish martial law last week. The resolution received support from 204 parliamentarians, including members of Yoon’s own People Power Party, surpassing the minimum two-thirds majority. Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has taken on the position of acting president during the suspension.

The Constitutional Court will now deliberate on Yoon’s fate, with six of the nine judges required to approve impeachment for his removal. A snap election will be held within 60 days if it is withdrawn. “The future of the Republic of Korea and our hope is in the hands of the people, our hope is strong. Thank you very much,” said South Korean speaker Woo Won-shik.

Today’s development comes after the first attempt to impeach the president. It failed to materialise earlier this week due to his party People Power Party’s boycott. Meanwhile, reacting to the development, PM Duk-soo said he would do his best to run the government in a stable manner. “My heart is very heavy,” the PM told reporters following the impeachment vote.
