Game of Thrones’ season 4 just got a bit more exciting and bloodier with the return of Sir Gregor Clegane aka. The Mountain and his upcoming fight with Oberyn Martell, the Red Viper.
The GOT team tries to squeeze some juice in its latest season as it near the finale. The Mountain was last seen slicing up people like food in the last episode. On the other hand, Prince Oberyn emerged as Tyrion’s only champion for the death match against the Mountain.
You might be wondering why Oberyn would push himself right into the death cage for a good for nothing dwarf who has even been abandoned by his own family. We all know Oberyn is anything but a kind heart, so why is he doing it then? Revenge is the answer you are looking for.
Oberyn is the brother of Elia Martell, the wife of Rhaegar Targaryen. Elia was viciously killed and raped by Mountain on the orders of Lannisters hence, Obeyn who was very close to his sister has a golden opportunity to personally put The Mountain to death.
The show managers have hinted that the upcoming hand to hand battle between the Mountain and Oberyn will be one of a kind in their following statement,
“It’s not just people hacking at each other with spears and swords. It’s the culmination of 20 years of anger and hatred and thirst for vengeance coming to a head in this amazing set piece.”
For GOT’s season 4 Sir Gregor’s role is being played by the third strongest man of the world Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, who weighs 420 pound and is 6’9” ft. tall.
Not much was revealed by the GOT’s cast and crew but the show’s director has indicated that few new faces will be introduced during the upcoming episodes.
Let’s have a look at both of the chosen champions to have a better idea as to who holds the ground more firmly in this battle.
Oberyn Martell
Prince Oberyn of House Martell belongs to the ruling family of Dorne. Also known as the Red Viper, Oberyn is the brother to late Elia Martell, the wife of Rhaegar Targaryen.
Prince Oberyn was trained at the Citadel during his youth to become a Maester but he soon lost interest in his training and became the master of poisons.
Oberyn is famous for his sexual appetite and is usually found in bed after his arrival in Westeros.
The only time we saw Oberyn in a fight throughout the season was when he heard Lannister men singing “the Rains of Castamere”, sending him into a quite a rage and even before one of the men can draw out his sword, Oberyn had already sliced his dagger into the man’s wrist.
Ser Gregor Clegane
One of the most ruthless and most feared characters of the Westeros, Ser Gregor Clegane aka The Mountain is the head of House Clegane, a knightly house from the Westerlands.
A faithful, loyal and ferocious servant of the House Lannister, the Mountain raped and murdered Oberyn’s sister Elia along with her children as per the instructions given by Tywin Lannister.
In the words of Tywin Lannister, “I always thought you had a talent for violence.”
A well-built man against a fast and sharp one makes the upcoming episode of GOT a truly worthy one to watch. With the story already moving out of the track from its novel, it’s hard to say as to who will win; although many re praying for Oberyn’s win as Tyrion’s (The imp) life depends solely on his victory.
