The Pakistan Super League’s (PSL) Technical Committee has upheld the two-match suspension of Fakhar Zaman, dismissing his appeal against the penalty handed down earlier this week.
As a result, the Lahore Qalandars opener will now serve the full ban after being found guilty of a Level 3 breach of the tournament’s Code of Conduct.
What Led to the Controversy?
The incident dates back to a heated clash between Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings at the Gaddafi Stadium.
During the match, concerns were raised over the condition of the ball, prompting the on-field umpires to intervene. After inspection and subsequent proceedings, Fakhar was charged with ball-tampering, a serious offence under cricket’s playing regulations.
Despite strongly denying the allegation, he opted for a full disciplinary hearing, which was conducted by match referee Roshan Mahanama.
Following the initial review, Mahanama handed Fakhar Zaman a two-match suspension, the maximum punishment for a first Level 3 offence in the PSL.
Unsurprisingly, Fakhar challenged the decision, seeking a reassessment. However, the appeal process brought no change in outcome.
Committee’s Fresh Review Confirms Verdict
The matter was escalated to the PSL Technical Committee, which carried out a de novo inquiry. In simple terms, they re-examined everything from scratch.
The panel, comprising Professor Javed Malik, Dr Mumraiz Naqshband and Syed Ali Naqi, reviewed all available evidence and heard submissions before reaching a final verdict.
Their conclusion was clear – the original decision stands. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that the appeal had been dismissed and the two-match ban would remain in place.
