Ground broken for Zameen Developments’ latest project ‘Zameen Ace Mall’ in DHA Islamabad

Zameen Developments organised the official groundbreaking ceremony for its first mixed-use project in Islamabad, titled ‘Zameen Ace Mall’, on Thursday, July 11.

  • Project is a joint venture between Zameen Developments, Ace Group and UAE-based MIH Group
  • Zameen Ace Mall comprises shops, hypermarket, residential apartments and hotel apartments

The project is a joint venture between Zameen Developments, renowned Islamabad-based developer Ace Group, and UAE-based MIH Group. Zameen, CEO Zeeshan Ali Khan and Ace Group CEO Usman Zafar Cheema were the guests of honour at the ceremony, which took place at the project’s site in Sector J, DHA Islamabad-Rawalpindi Phase II. The project’s on-site sales office was also inaugurated at the same time.

The project is set to feature high-end residential apartments and split-level penthouses, hotel apartments, and a full-scale mall featuring retail outlets, a hypermart, and a multiplex cinema. Other facilities include a swimming pool, sports bar, health and fitness club, fine dining decks, and dedicated car parking large enough to accommodate up to 800 vehicles at a time.

The 14-storey multipurpose building is being built on 20 kanals (10,000 square yards) of land on the main Sir Syed Boulevard of DHA Islamabad-Rawalpindi’s Phase II, and offers upwards of 800 units in the form of shops, residential apartments and hotel apartments.

“Zameen Ace Mall presents a refined combination of contemporary hotel, shopping, and living experiences. It promises to promote the culture of mixed-use developments in the country with a view to optimizing available space, and will InshaAllah address a large gap in the national real estate development market,” said Khan.

Khan also said a further four projects were in the pipeline for Zameen Developments in 2019. “Two of our projects are already under construction in Lahore and Islamabad-Rawalpindi now, and we’re looking forward to launching another handful of projects around the country before the year is out. There are exciting times ahead,” he added.

“Ace Group’s partnership with Zameen Developments is a strategic endeavour aimed at maximizing the strengths of both companies,” said Cheema. “Pakistan is lagging behind in the region in the development of multipurpose buildings and this partnership aims to take this challenge head-on with well-planned residential and commercial projects,” he added.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Zameen.com CEO Zeeshan Ali Khan, Ace Group CEO Usman Zafar Cheema, Zameen.com Country Head Ahmad Bhatti, Senior Director – North Hasan Danish, Director Project Development Fahad Arif Khawaja, and other members of the companies’ senior management.

Ben Stokes’ Emergence: From 2016’s Villain to 2019’s Hero!

You have to admit, Ben Stokes has had one lucky final, given that the umpires had made a HUGE mistake which led England to victory!

Let’s rewind a little to Twenty20 World Cup at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the same night when Stokes literally gifted West Indies the trophy in 2016.

Unfortunately for him, Carlos Brathwaite took not one or two but four consecutive sixes on his balls and the all-rounder fell to his knees realizing what had just happened.

Carrying nothing less but a very deep wound, Stokes needed a way to be able to get over that loss.

A few weeks ago while in a press conference in a hotel in Jaipur, Stokes opened up about the Bristol incident, He said:

I don’t want to be remembered as the guy who had a fight in the street. I want to do things on the field to be remembered for.

Stokes was caught in a bar fight late at night. Following the incident in September 2017, Stokes was acquitted of affray at Bristol Crown Court in August last year, before the England and Wales Cricket Board’s Discipline Commission concluded his 15-month exile after a hearing in December last year.

Since then, Stokes has come a long way, knowing what immense pressure he had on his shoulders, he knew he was the one who had to be England’s knight in shining armor. He received that chance at the ICC World Cup 2019 final against New Zealand.

The all-rounder gave the game every last bit of energy and mental strength he had. Stokes carried England on his shoulder through an unbeaten 84 off 98 balls to tie the match. He was the only man in the England innings who hit a six, and from a point of apparent hopelessness, he made 32 from his final 13 deliveries to earn the Super Over.

When Stokes saw that Jofra Archer was in need of some pep talk, he approached the bowler who had the responsibility of leading their team to victory.

He came to talk to me because of that. He probably went through the same emotions, the same feelings but being on the losing side.

If we had lost today, I don’t know what I would have done tomorrow. To back up what he said if we did lose there’s a T20 (World Cup) next year and I’d have another chance.

Root came up to me and said some inspirational words as well. I knew if we did lose, it wasn’t the end of the world. I’m glad the guys look up to me and trust me to do it. -Archer

When the final had to be decided by a Super-Over, Stokes knew everything he had worked for all came down to this over and very crucial 6 deliveries.

Soon, the zero became the hero as he won the trophy for his proud nation in a match to be remembered. Stokes has now gone down in history as a legend.

How to Block Unwanted Spams, Promotional Messages & Calls

16th July Update: A few days ago, the Lahore High Court had directed Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to find a way to put an end to unwanted promotional calls and messages.

PTA has now dispatched a message with instructions on how a user can stop these messages from spamming their inbox.

According to it, the user needs to type ‘REG’ and send it to 3627 to register on the ‘DO NOT CALL REGISTER’. Those who want to receive the calls can send ‘UNREG’ to the same number.

July 9th: The Lahore High Court has directed Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to put an end to unwanted promotional messages, calls, and spam messages as a result of a petition.

Muhammad Shafique, Communication Director of PTA was asked by Justice Shahid Jamil why are the officials not taking any action against these messages.

Furthermore, Shafique shared that there is no mechanism that can stop the mass roll-out of unwarranted messages. However, Justice Jamil pointed out that action can be taken, if not completely stopping them, against those who are spreading them.

Asides regular SMS texts, WhatsApp, Facebook, and other social media platforms have also become a channel for promotional spamming. Brands send their messages to 10,000 individuals at a time for the cost of just Rs. 100-200 because of Facebook Groups and other platforms that take money for it.

Even some marketing firms are unethically taking the money and spamming customers by bombarding them with messages.

We have now to see what will happen, whether or not PTA will be able to put an end to those calls and messages.

Pakistanis have never been happy about paying taxes. A report by Tribune said that only 1.4m taxpayers submitted their annual returns for 2018.

While taxes are a legal requirement, there are many other reasons why paying them should be encouraged. The tax money we pay should be useful for our own welfare as a state, so that provision of education, medical, and other basic facilities can be made possible for the general public.

Budget 2019-20: New Proposals Bear Bad News for Non-Filers

However, after the PTI government rolled out the fiscal budget for 2019-20, it was revealed that taxes on even the most basic necessities increased a lot. From milk to sugar to fuel, prices are just soaring upwards and the public is not too pleased.

Amidst this chaos, the hashtag #BePakistaniPayTaxes has emerged on Twitter, and a live debate on why or why not taxes should be paid can be seen.

Paying taxes will help Pakistan become a self-reliant country, think many.

Even Veena Malik agrees, as she adds that she herself is a tax payer.

Definitely, one of the major ways to contribute to a debt-free country is to pay taxes.

Many support their decision to pay taxes saying that it is our taxes that will help the country prosper and grow economically.

PTI itself made a number of points in favor of paying taxes. One of them states that, when people eligible to pay taxes do not pay them, the lower class of the country suffers.

A PTI voter tweeted his point of view from a business owner’s perspective, saying that in order to be able to pay taxes, businesses must prosper. And naturally, it is difficult for businesses to succeed in an economy where the most basic goods and facilities are heavily taxed.

Another very important point was made by someone, stating that people can be expected to pay taxes after they are employed. In an economy where employment opportunities are decreasing and the market is suffering, you cannot expect the number of tax payers to increase.

It is also important to note, however, that when the government goes against the rules to do favours for its ministers, it discourages the public from paying taxes.

July 10th, 2019: A private bank in Pakistan has declared a popular movie and series streaming platform ‘Netflix’ as un-Islamic.

The news picked up after Netflix user Mohammed Ahmed Tariq reached out to the Shariah-compliant bank when his payments were rejected for the renewal for his subscription.

When he got in touch with the bank, he was informed that the issue was taking place because it falls against the bank’s Shariah policy.

While talking to BBC Urdu, Tariq shared that he had not even come close to think that this would be the reason for the rejection of his payment.

In an unexpected turn on events, Company chairman Liang Hua said that Huawei still prefers Google’s Android operating system over their own Hongmeng OS, despite it being 60% faster.

On Friday, during a press conference, Liang Hua shared that Hongmeng OS was developed for IoT devices, and not smartphones. When it comes to phones and handsets, Huawei prefers Android.

The Hongmeng OS is primarily developed for IoT devices that will reduce latency… In terms of smartphones.

iPhone XR Models to be ‘Made in India’

Apple has been looking for alternatives to decrease its reliance on Chinese manufacturing power. In a change of events, India has become the tech titan’s new favorite!

Reportedly, Foxconn’s Bangalore plant will soon start making the Apple-branded A2105 device used in iPhone XR.

For now, the plant is being used to manufacturer low-end iPhones including the 6S, SE and so on. Now, it is highly believed that Apple will also give the green signal for the production of high-end iPhones as well.

The reason behind Apple’s move can also be Trump Administration’s tempory ban on Huawei from conducting business in the US which had caused a tremendous loss to the tech sector.

An unnamed source has shared that iPhone XS could also be manufactured in India in the coming months.

For some time now, Chinese manufacturers have been widely using the Indian market, including Xiaomi, Huawei, and others. This is largely due to excessive import taxes on the higher-end iPhone models.

Apple’s local production means iPhones will become more affordable for the locals and no import taxes or duty will be applied.

This gets us thinking whether a Chinese or foreign-based tech company will consider starting a local plant in Pakistan in the near-future.

On Every Rs.100 Recharge Users Will Receive Rs.88 as Mobile Balance!

Mobile network operators have now abolished the service charges and operational charges on mobile top-ups in Pakistan.

According to a report published by ProPakistani, be it card recharge or amount transfer, the Supreme Court has restored all taxes on mobiles last month in its latest verdict and did not interfere with matters of public revenue and tax collection system.

Users who recharge Rs.100 via card of top-up will receive Rs.88 as their mobile balance. Previously, a user used to receive Rs.72-77. All telecom operators have now started to adopt this new rate.

Furthermore, the report claims that the 10% service/maintenance charges on every Rs. 100 card has now been withdrawn. On the other hand, mobile users will have to pay 12.5% withholding tax and 19.5% FED as it is still applicable on every recharge.

Previously, customers had 10 months of no tax charges, on each rs.100 recharge they received the complete amount.

The portal – “Directorate of Inspection & Registration of Private Institutions, Sindh”, citizens will be able to get all the information related to fees and which schools are licensed to charge.

Moreover, the education department will also have an organized system to record the data of all the private schools operating in the province.

Recently, the Sindh education and literacy department has launched an online portal to digitize the registration and fee structures of all private schools across the province.

Through the portal, citizens will be able to get all the information related to fees and which schools are licensed to charge.

The online portal, accessible at www.dirprivateschools.gos.pk, was made functional last weekend and will be inaugurated this week by the Sindh Education Minister Sardar Shah at the Sindh Boys Auditorium.

It has been said that the profiles of all private schools of the province will be available on the online portal within the next six months.

While talking to media, the Inspection Directorate team revealed that a systematic process will be required for private schools to get registered.

They said:

Schools will be registered only if everything is according to our requirements, and if the school does not meet our required standards, it would be rejected.

They also added:

 No additional costs have been added to the registration fees charged from the schools.

Update- 15th July 2019: Recently, a video has been doing all rounds on social media in which an eight-year-old girl, Kushi, can be seen driving a water tanker in Karachi.

It has been said that the minor girl has been driving the tanker to earn money for the treatment of her father who is paralyzed and support her family members.

In the videos, she shares that she is heading to Rasheedabad to fetch water from Sher Shah.

Last week, a press conference was held at Karachi Press Club where the minor girl revealed that her father suffered from a paralysis attack about a year ago. She is the only bread earner for her family now and demanded to let her drive the water tanker.

Kushi shares that she wants to go to school and become an army officer but because of their circumstances, she cannot do so.

The main concern that arose from this situation is if the girl meets an accident of any loss, who will be responsible? Her family? The employer? The authorities? Or everyone?


Update- July 11th, 2019: Power supply to the Gharo pumping station will be suspended from 9am to 4pm today (Thursday) due to maintenance work being done by K-Electric.

June 20th, 2019: Severe water shortage is being reported in around 65% areas of Karachi since a while now, and this serious environmental issue remains unresolved till date.

Considering that water is the most basic necessity, it is deplorable that the authorities have been unable to take any prompt or sustainable action on the issue.

A notable factor is that the citizens have been paying their water bills despite the scarcity they are facing.
