Islamabad: 23rd May 2022 – Syngenta is a leading multinational enterprise, revolutionizing the global agricultural sector, with its innovative products and solutions. Syngenta Pakistan (Pvt.) Limited recently organized a policy dialogue on sustainable agriculture in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province. This event was also in sync with Syngenta’s vision to achieve food security through higher yields & productivity by deploying new technologies in the country.

The session brought together key stakeholders from the public, private, development, and academic sectors, including; the Secretary – Agriculture Department of KPK, Director General (DG) Agriculture Extension of KPK, DG Environmental Protection Agency of KPK, Vice-Chancellor University of Agriculture Peshawar and representatives from prestigious institutions like; UNDP, UN-FAO, Plant Protection Department, Pakistan, Sustainable Development Unit-KPK and the University of Peshawar.

Providing insights about the KPK government’s valuable initiative for the restoration of over 900,000 acres of agricultural land in KPK, the Provincial Secretary of Agriculture highlighted the need for immediate actions to deal with climate change and food security issues in the province. Other distinguished speakers shared their expertise about the global best practices and suggested valuable contributions to enable sustainable agriculture in the province. A way forward for making the country and the province food secure was also discussed, while the participants urged the agricultural sector and its peripheral industry for coordinated efforts to deal with overlapping crises of Food insecurity, climate change, water scarcity, and rising temperatures, across the country.

Participants appreciated the pivotal role played by Syngenta’s innovative crop protection, crop enhancement, seed care products, and seeds, in promoting sustainable agriculture and food security, all over Pakistan. They lauded Syngenta’s efforts to initiate a policy discourse on sustainable agriculture in the province and the company’s pioneering solutions that promise higher farm profits, crop quality, and convenience for the farmers.

The Head of Business Sustainability and Crop Protection Development at Syngenta Pakistan – Mr. M. Tauseef ul Haq stated that: “This was a truly insightful conference and I would like to thank the key stakeholders of the agricultural sector for their great response to this forum.”

Why Are Pakistani Ads Focused On The Urdu Speaking Community?

A number of Pakistani ads that pass by your eyes, you will find to be in the Urdu language. Be it an ice cream ad, ad for tea, biscuit, or telecom, the conversation will largely be conducted in Urdu. Pakistan is a country that brings together numerous cultures that are rooted in extremely different languages. This information sparked me onto the quest of getting the answer to the question that why are the ads mostly focused on the Urdu-speaking community?

Some stats on Pakistan

According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) census data, the groups of people divided with respect to language are: Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, Balochi, Siraiki, among a few others. Putting it all into numbers, 44.15% of the Pakistani population comprise of Punjabi speaking community; 14.1% Sindhi speakers, 15.42% Pashto speakers, 3.57% Balochi-speakers, 10.53% Siraiki speakers, other languages combined comprised 4.66% of the Pakistanis. This leaves a mere 7.57% of more than 200 million people who speak Urdu. Why then, do our ads not accommodate the 92.43% and focus on the rest?

Now, why are the Pakistani ads in Urdu? Simple, the ad-makers speak Urdu having lived most of their lives in the big cities like Karachi, Islamabad, and Lahore. But it is not that simple really. It does not depend on the ad maker, rather it depends on the advertiser (what language they want). These advertisers know all these numbers too and yet, they want the ads to be made exactly the way they are being made.

It is not like they don’t know where the masses are and who they want to cater to. They know it all.

Why?

One of the reasons that might just answer the why can be that creating ads in Urdu sits well with the perception of the brand. Should they choose to stray from this language, it will affect the brand’s image. By straying away from Urdu, they will be choosing one of the provincial languages. If they do that, other communities existing in Pakistan will be sidelined. They will instantly feel more distanced from the brand than the distance they felt when the ads would be in Urdu.

And that could be why most ads are in Urdu. They are not exactly addressing the Urdu-speaking community, rather it is something that brings together all the divided communities.

There are a number of teachings being dispensed in a drama, at a subconscious level and most of them get adopted by viewers. What leads to problematic teachings being accepted? They are conveyed as traits of protagonists. While the drama creators refuse to do better, it is our task to pick out the ‘red flag characters’ in Pakistani dramas. Following is a list of a few who were full of red flags but were featured in high-profile dramas.

Ashar – Humsafar

Loved by many, Ashar and Khirad were the focus of the industry for quite some time. But did you know Ashar was brimming with red flags? Ashar knew that Sara was interested in him so the moment he got to know about it, he should have distanced himself from her. But he wanted the company of his ‘friend’, even after he got married. Danish – Mere Paas Tum Ho

Another red flag in Pakistani dramas is Dr. Haris. The character was a psychologist in Sabaat. He was giving therapy to Miral. Now, due to transference, clearly, Miral began having feelings for Haris. Meanwhile, Dr. Haris, a victim of countertransference also considered himself to be in love with Miral. They got married.

To Pakistanis I would like to say, this is a red flag. In other countries, it is, in fact, a crime. Before you get married to your psychologist, consult another psychologist! Just because Dr. Haris is good-looking and is a positive character does not mean you discount his non-ethical behavior.

Pari – Parchayee

Parchayee featured Pari and Haaris. Pari was the main character’s daughter. She was in love with her cousin even though she knew he was interested in someone else. When she does end up getting who she wished for, she has to make way to his heart. How does the lady do that? She does all the cleaning; the sweeping, the dusting, and the cooking.

Parchayee, hence, distinguishes between the good and the bad woman this way. The good woman does all the household work even if she is perfectly capable to have a career or get higher education. And the bad woman will choose to get away from it.

Is Pari really the good woman? No, she is a red flag! You DO NOT have to prove your worth by putting yourself down!

Zohaib & Zahra From Sitamgar

Sitamgar featured Zohaib who cheated on his wife. He later got married to the person he was cheating with after knowing she would soon die. But he couldn’t stay loyal to her either and upon meeting the first wife sometime later, he said that his second marriage was a mercy marriage. Even though he had cheated, it was all ignored and he was painted in a good light.

Next up is Zahra, Zohaib’s first wife. After seeing clear signs of cheating and even after getting the divorce papers, she stayed loyal to him. In the end, it was revealed that she forgave him, and all for love.

How To Search Real-World Subjects On iPhone?

1. Take A Photo

The first thing you need to do is take a picture of the subject you’re trying to learn more about, whether a plant, an animal, or a landmark. If you already have a photo of the subject, that works just as well. Now, pull up the image in your Photos app, then look for a star next to the (i) at the bottom of the screen (you might need to tap the image once for this option to appear).

2. Find The Lookup Option

If there’s a star attached to the (i), that indicates Photos can use Visual Look Up on this image. If there’s no star, it either can’t identify the subject, or the image isn’t good enough to work with.

3. Look For Information

If there is a star, tap the (i). Here, you’ll see the typical expanded information options you usually do, with one crucial difference: “Look Up.” Depending on the photo’s subject, you’ll see different icons and titles for Look Up. For example, If you took a photo of a dog, you can see a paw print icon next to the word “Dog.” But that’s not all tap Look Up, and your iPhone will give its best guess about the dog’s breed.

4. Results

In your results, you’ll see Siri Knowledge, which points to articles from sources like Wikipedia with similar images of your subject. If you’re looking at a landmark, you might also see its address, as well as contact information when applicable.

While the most convenient use case for Visual Look Up is definitely for iPhone, you can use the feature on your iPad and Mac as well. The collaboration is in honour of National Pizza Party Day, May 20. And to celebrate, Pepsi is hosting a Pepsi-Roni pizza party in lower Manhattan which is allegedly pepperoni’s birthplace. Between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Those wanting to snag a slice of the Pepsi-Roni pizza can stop by Made in New York Pizza’s West Village location and try it for free. But the party is only going on while supplies last.

After that, text “PEPSIANDPIZZA” to 81234 and upload receipts that show you ordered a Pepsi and pizza. Pepsi will then send you up to $3 to reimburse you for the experience. It’s a little less cool than eating a free slice of Pepsi-Roni, but it’s still a little bit of free money.

Another way to get a version of the Pepsi-Roni experience is to order your pizza and Pepsi through DoorDash. Any customer who orders pizza and Pepsi with orders over $15 will get $5 off.

Online shopping is still considered murky waters in Pakistan. Not being able to touch your prospective buy has a psychological effect on us. To address that fear, brands began adding an option for customers to leave reviews. Seeing these reviews, the potential customers feel reassured that the product will be a safe buy. But most brands also feature fake reviews.

Fake Reviews

Due to the fact that if customers do not see reviews, good or bad, they do not go through with the purchase, brands are now paying people to send in reviews. Are all paid reviews bad? Not really. When a brand tells you they will pay you regardless of what you say, it becomes a paid review. The person reviewing can say what they feel about the product truthfully. That is not a fake review. But after seeing that reviews help more customers to pool up, some brands get people to do fake reviews. They pay people to write everything good about the product; that there is nothing better than the said product.

Is it ethical?

When customers see a 5-star rating for a product, they will go ahead with it. And if it was a product with fake reviews, they will end up with a bad product. The money and time, all of it gone to waste for the customer making it a fairly unethical practice. But the brand surely made a profit so even if unethical why should other brands care?

What can be done?

The brand side must care because when more companies begin to take this approach, they tell the customers that no reviews can be trusted. In the long run, even if a legit brand, that has never asked for fake reviews, gets a 100% positive rating, the customers will be reluctant to accept it. The phenomenon of metaverse has existed for quite some time. It was there in the Matrix and Ready Player One. In fact, it was also making its way into the world for some time with virtual reality games offering you options to make purchases real-time purchases. But since it was usually in games, it wasn’t being given much attention. However, with the parent company Facebook rebranding itself as Meta, people were blasted with the fact that metaverse was soon to become the truth.

As you would know that the plan of the metaverse is to allow people to spend their whole lives in a virtual universe. Be it attending school, going to the library, shopping, having virtual cars to do all these tasks online; everything to be done there. This opens up the possibility of brands having a presence in the virtual world, of course. And they have begun doing it.

NASCAR, the auto racing sanctioning and operating company, is already dropping the first digital car in a game known as jailbreak. Soon, apparel brands and other categories will jump in too. But this is still, metaverse in the global context.

Metaverse in Pakistan

Entertainment, technology, trends – initially, it was hypothesized that it takes Pakistan ten years to adopt something from India which they adopted ten years after the first world. Of course, the advent of digital has revamped the situation. While the ten years may not balance the equation now, it still takes time for Pakistan to adopt what is going on in the Global North.

Like we discussed above, Metaverse is still in its infancy. Brands of the Global North themselves are still trying to understand it. 1. You don’t look at the screen

Now that when most people try to get their hands on dramas in original languages, they also need subtitles. But the subtitles move at the same speed as the verbal dialogues, so they are fast. So your eyes are almost always fixed at the bottom of the screen rather than at the screen.

2. Unsynced with the whole country

If you are too much into a particular country’s dramas, you won’t just be watching the completed ones but also the ongoing ones. These weekly dramas make you wail for the next episodes, and while you are screaming for them, your fellow citizens can’t relate to it because their hype is for, let’s say Sabaat, and you cry for ‘GOBLIN.’

3. You have dark circles

You forget your studies, you fail to sleep, and you miss out on the food. But all you can think of is one more episode. And the dark circles become your friend. Once you get into a foreign drama industry, you start obsessing over everything shown in that. Top of the list is the language. 5. Food, and you want it

You start obsessing about the food you have never eaten. And you have only seen the actors eat it exotically. So if your mom makes daal chawal and you are thinking of jjajangmyeon, you, my friend, are a foreign drama addict.

These are just a few signs, but if you have them, you are a lost case. But it doesn’t matter to you because you love it, and that’s another sign.

Mango season might be gone, but that must not restrict you from enjoying the beloved fruit all year round. Thanks to science and the frozen fruit market. Mangoes are paired with a variety of dishes because they must not be only enjoyed alone. This means that we can now take mangoes to the next level. And what better way to eat them than making a biryani out of it? Absurd? Absolutely No! Because this recipe has been in the books for so long. Yet, only very few people know about it.

Mango chicken biryani is a spicy, sweet and sour Mughlai treat. Rich, spicy chicken biryani with a base of raw and ripe mangoes. All of them merged beautifully to give the spot-on balance to sourness, sweetness and spiciness. No fancy masalas (spices) are required. All you need is the ingredients that are easily available in every kitchen. Yet, it is one of the easiest biryani to make, which is also delicious.

Ingredients

5 cups basmati rice, soaked for 45 minute
1 kg, Chicken on bones, cut into medium size pieces
1 & 1/2 cup ripe mangoes, finely chopped
350-gram thick yoghurt
2 teaspoon large onions, finely chopped
1 teaspoon turmeric
2 teaspoons coriander powder
2 teaspoons garam masala powder
2 lemons Juice
Salt to taste
Water as needed
6-7 tablespoons oil
Grind to a coarse masala paste
1 & ½ cup raw mangoes, roughly chopped
1/4 cup garlic cloves
2 &1/2 inches ginger piece
8-10 green chillies

Whole Spices

2 inches cinnamon stick
8 cloves
8-10 green cardamoms
2 bay leaves
1 teaspoon, black peppercorns
2 teaspoons cumin seed

For Layering

4-5 green chillies
3/4 cup coriander leaves, very finely chopped
1/3 cup mint leaves
1/2 cup brown onions
1/3 cup Saffron soaked milk
100 ml, melted ghee

Instructions

Clean, wash and drain the chicken pieces. Marinate the chicken with turmeric powder and salt. Heat oil in a large pan. Add the whole spices and fry for a few seconds followed by the chopped onions & salt and saute until translucent. Now, add the marinated chicken pieces and sauté on high, for 4 minutes. Add the prepared paste and sauté on high for another 3-4 minutes. Add the spice powders- turmeric, coriander powder, & garam masala powder.
Once the chicken is done, sprinkle some ghee over the chicken masala. Garnish coriander leaves and mint leaves along with slit chillies and fried onions.
Add curd and mix until blended well. Then add the chopped mangoes and lemon juice. Mix well. Cover and cook until the chicken is done. In a large pan or handi, add enough water and bring it to a boil. Add rice and a few drops of lemon juice along with salt. Cook rice until done.
Gently spread cooked rice over the prepared chicken masala. Top it with saffron milk and pour ghee. Cover it with a tight lid and keep it on simmer for 30 minutes. Switch off the heat and let it stand for a few minutes. Mango chicken biryani is ready to serve. Serve hot with the raita of your choice.
