FED Cripples Farmers, Fruit Juice Producers

The Pakistani juice beverage industry, home to a large, heavily monitored taxpayer base, has faced escalating taxation in recent years.

The 2023-2024 budget raised the Federal Excise Duty (FED) from 5% (plus 17% sales tax) in 2018-19 to 20% (plus 18% sales tax). Policymakers overlooked the combined impact of this increased taxation, a more than 50% rise in raw material costs, and inflationary pressures on prices. Instead of boosting overall tax revenue, this has led to a diminished tax contribution from beverage sector revenues to the national exchequer.

Prior to the recent hike in federal excise duty, the fruit juice industry was flourishing, with a turnover of approximately Rs 60 billion, investments totaling Rs 40 billion, and significant new job creation. From the consumer standpoint, heightened competition had broadened the product range to include healthier, sugar-restricted options. However, since the FED was implemented, the industry has faced significant growth setbacks. Sales have dropped, leading to a 40% reduction in volume, which has rippled through the industry. Many companies are now operating below full production capacity, and new investments have been delayed.

A particularly troubling aspect of the government’s taxation policy is its approach to lumping fruit beverages and packaged juices—including 100% fruit juices, nectars, and juice drinks—together for taxation. It’s essential to acknowledge the significance of these beverages in modern fast-paced lifestyles and diets; they provide essential nutrients, hydration, and convenience, helping consumers meet their daily nutritional needs.

To address these concerns, it’s crucial to differentiate between the various beverage categories. This could be implemented through front-of-package (FOP) labels and a tiered taxation system, which is standard practice in many countries worldwide. Furthermore, the government should reevaluate its taxation strategy across the beverage industry.

While meeting national tax goals is crucial, a more effective strategy might involve reevaluating the tax structure to broaden the overall tax base, rather than increasing taxes on already taxed industries. Eliminating the FED or introducing progressive taxation measures could rejuvenate the formal juice beverage industry and ensure that healthier options remain accessible to consumers. Additionally, the government should intensify regulations on the informal beverage sector to guarantee product safety and quality while effectively incorporating it into the tax system.

As we shift towards a preference for healthier products that don’t strain consumer budgets, it is crucial for the government to support the formal juice beverages industry. By tackling the issues that fruit growers and farmers face and regulating the informal juice sector, the government can not only increase revenue but also spur economic growth and ensure that consumers have access to a variety of juice drink options.

For an entire decade, Nadia Khan struggled to salvage the relationship, hiding her struggles from her parents to avoid disappointing them. Ahmad Shahzad Advocates For Key Change In Pakistan Bowling Lineup

Ahmad Shahzad has voiced his opinion on the necessary tweaks needed in the Pakistan lineup for the crucial third and decisive T20I against Ireland in Dublin today.

With the series tied at 1-1, today’s match holds the key to clinching the trophy, and Shahzad believes that a strategic change in the bowling department could tilt the scales in Pakistan’s favour.

Speaking to a local news channel, Shahzad highlighted the need for improved bowling performance, emphasizing the pivotal role bowlers play in shaping a team’s success.

“If you want to win any tournament, it is important that the bowlers step up,” Shahzad asserted, expressing his concern over the flat performance of the Pakistani bowlers thus far in the series.

In his recommendation for a lineup adjustment, Ahmad Shahzad advocated for the inclusion of mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed, citing the need for a fresh approach to bolster the bowling attack.

“Luckily, we still have a few matches before the World Cup to sort out our bowling issues. The bowlers have looked flat to me and maybe we should consider including Abrar Ahmed in the lineup,” Shahzad suggested.

With three T20Is under his belt for Pakistan, Abrar has shown promise, particularly during his standout performances in PSL 9, where he clinched 16 wickets in 10 games for Quetta Gladiators.

Meanwhile, Shahzad also emphasized the importance of embracing modern-day cricketing trends to stay competitive on the international stage.

“The cricketing world is evolving, and Pakistan should do the same if they want to compete with the top teams,” Shahzad remarked, advocating for an attacking mindset in batting strategies.

Drawing from Pakistan’s resilient performance in the second T20I against Ireland, Shahzad applauded the team’s aggressive approach, highlighting the diminishing role of traditional innings anchoring in modern T20 cricket.

“When you are at the crease, you should play an impactful innings or let someone else come in,” Shahzad emphasized, underscoring the need for dynamic and impactful batting performances.

Saim Ayub Shares The Story Behind His Trademark ‘No-Look’ Shot

saim-ayub-shares-the-story-behind-no-look-shot-fab-four

In the world of cricket, innovation often takes centre stage, with players constantly pushing the boundaries of conventional shots. One such intriguing phenomenon is the ‘no-look’ shot of Saim Ayub, a stroke that has captivated cricket enthusiasts worldwide. But what exactly is this unique shot, and how did it come into existence?

What is the ‘no look’ shot?

Contrary to popular belief, the ‘no-look’ shot does not involve hitting the ball without looking at it. Instead, it challenges the traditional instinct of tracking the ball after it’s been struck.

In Ayub’s case, his version of the ‘no-look’ shot is a subtle yet effective manoeuvre, typically executed with finesse when targeting the leg side. It involves a subtle dab over his right shoulder, sending the ball soaring for a boundary or even a maximum.

Rather than admiring his handiwork, Ayub maintains his focus on the pitch, adding an element of mystery and flair to his batting prowess.

The story behind the ‘no look’ shot of Saim Ayub

In a recent interview with a local news channel, the 21-year-old opening batter shed light on the genesis of his unconventional shot.

Recounting its debut during the National T20 in 2022, Ayub revealed that the ‘no-look’ shot was not a product of meticulous planning but rather a spontaneous act born out of necessity.

“I was struggling to find scoring opportunities, and when I noticed the fine leg fielder positioned up in the circle, I instinctively played the shot,” Ayub explained. “It wasn’t a deliberate decision to avoid looking at the ball; it just happened naturally.”

Despite its allure, Ayub remains pragmatic about the risks associated with the ‘no-look’ shot, opting to deploy it sparingly and only when circumstances demand it.

“I don’t prioritize this since it is a high-risk shot. I try to play the other shots more often and only play the no-look shot when it is absolutely necessary,”

saim-ayub-shares-the-story-behind-no-look-shot

Saim Ayub also emphasized that he prioritizes playing his best and contributing to the team’s success over personal milestones.

“My target is Man of the Match, not fifty or a hundred. I don’t think about numbers as I aim to win the match for my team. It can be any figure, 50, 70 or 100, but I don’t think about that since I’m focused on winning the match,” Ayub emphasized.

While Ayub has showcased glimpses of his talent in domestic and PSL matches, his transition to the international arena has been a work in progress.

With 19 T20I appearances under his belt since his debut against Afghanistan, Ayub acknowledges the need to translate his domestic success into consistent performances at the highest level. He has scored a meagre 270 runs in 17 innings at a strike rate of 131.06.

FBR Proposes 90% Tax On Mobile Recharges For Non-Filers

Source: FinPK

In an effort to increase tax revenues and ensure everyone contributes their fair share, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has proposed a bold move targeting those who haven’t been filing their taxes.

A Bold Step Toward Tax Compliance

Under this new plan, the FBR wants to raise the withholding tax significantly, jumping from a small 2.5 per cent to a whopping 90 per cent for those who haven’t been following the rules.

Income tax returns: Non-filers to face SIM blockage, utility disconnection
Source: MM

Let’s say someone who hasn’t been filing their taxes decides to top up their mobile phone with Rs100. Instead of the usual Rs2.5 deduction, a whopping Rs90 will be taken and given to the tax authority. The FBR recently put out lists identifying over 500,000 people who haven’t been filing their taxes. They’ve asked the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and telecom companies to block their SIM cards. So far, they’ve already blocked around 11,500 SIM cards, and more blocks are expected soon.

Blocking SIM Cards

Telecom companies have been given until May 15 to block SIM cards of all the non-filers identified. This move comes after the FBR found millions of potential taxpayers who haven’t been meeting their tax obligations. Out of these, over half a million people were picked out for SIM card blocking based on factors like past income declarations and not filing taxes for 2023.

Non-filers to pay 90% tax on mobile balance
Source: MM

Targeting Potential Taxpayers

The Express Tribune previously reported that if the SIMs of non-filers aren’t blocked by May 15, the FBR might take legal action against the telecom companies. Sources say the FBR plans to discuss this matter further and may even take the telecom companies to court if they don’t comply with the Income Tax General Order (ITGO).

Initially, the telecom companies pushed back against the idea, arguing they were supposed to provide uninterrupted service to their customers unless specified otherwise in the law. However, They’ve changed their tune after talks with the FBR. So, with this new proposal, the FBR aims to ensure everyone chips in for the nation’s development, making sure tax obligations aren’t ignored.

“No Plans to Compete with Google Search”, Says OpenAI CEO

Source: Yahoo

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently took to social media to address rumors about a potential competitor to Google Search. Speculation had been rampant about OpenAI’s supposed plans to challenge Google’s dominance in the search engine field. However, Altman swiftly denied these rumors, clarifying that the upcoming announcement was neither about the much-anticipated GPT-5 nor a Google Search rival.

Announcement Teased

Altman’s message, shared on X (formerly Twitter), emphasized that the impending revelation, scheduled for Monday at 10:00 AM PT (10:30 PM IST), pertained to a different project altogether. While he remained tight-lipped about specifics, Altman expressed confidence that users would be impressed, teasing that the upcoming initiative “feels like magic.”

No plans to launch search engine to compete with Google: Clarifies OpenAI CEO
Source: Tech Mach

Coinciding with Altman’s statement, the official OpenAI account announced a live stream set for the same time as the CEO’s announcement. This stream would focus on updates for ChatGPT and GPT-4, drawing considerable attention, particularly with the anticipation surrounding Google I/O 2024 the following day.

No Google Search Competitor

Prior to Altman’s clarification, reports had speculated that OpenAI might be gearing up to unveil a revolutionary search engine powered by ChatGPT. The rumored search engine was purported to leverage ChatGPT’s capabilities to deliver real-time web information accurately, potentially posing a challenge to Google Search.

Some reports even suggested that a future version of ChatGPT, available exclusively to Plus subscribers, would possess the ability to extract data directly from the web and provide proper citations, addressing past concerns about accuracy. However, previous attempts at integrating real-time data reportedly encountered performance issues, leading OpenAI to abandon those plans.

Talent from Google Targeted

Recent reports from The Information and Bloomberg added fuel to the speculation, hinting at OpenAI’s recruitment efforts targeting talent from Google for a specialized project team. Despite Altman’s statement, these reports fueled ongoing speculation about the potential development of a search product at OpenAI.

Fakhar Zaman emphasized the importance of a wake-up call for the national team ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, slated to take place in the West Indies and the USA next month.

Reflecting on Pakistan’s shock loss in the first T20I against Ireland, Fakhar acknowledged the necessity of the defeat as a wake-up call for the team.

He highlighted how the disappointment fueled every player’s determination to bounce back stronger in the subsequent fixture.

“We needed a wake-up call considering the way we lost the first game. So it was in the back of our minds while we were playing the second game and that is why everyone was giving their best,” Fakhar said in a candid video released by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Digital.

With eyes set on the T20 World Cup, Fakhar Zaman emphasized the significance of maintaining the momentum gained from the second T20I victory. He expressed optimism about carrying the same energy and commitment into the global tournament.

Facing a daunting chase of 194 runs in the second T20I, Pakistan encountered early setbacks with the loss of key wickets. However, Fakhar Zaman’s partnership with Mohammad Rizwan turned the tide in Pakistan’s favour.

Fakhar’s blistering knock of 78 runs off 40 balls, complemented by Rizwan’s unbeaten 75, propelled Pakistan towards victory. Their aggressive approach and calculated strategy defied the early pressure, showcasing the team’s resilience and determination.

fakhar zaman

Fakhar revealed Pakistan’s game plan to counterattack despite the early setbacks. Their aggressive intent aimed to alleviate pressure and chase down the target swiftly, ultimately leading to a convincing win.

“Our plan was to counterattack despite losing two wickets early. There is pressure when you lose early wickets, but since we have planned to play attacking cricket, it releases all pressure,” Fakhar told PCB Digital.

With the series leveled at 1-1, all eyes are on the third and decisive T20I clash between Pakistan and Ireland. The outcome of this match will not only determine the series winner but also serve as a crucial stepping stone for Pakistan’s T20 World Cup campaign.

12 Beauty Brands Accused Of Misleading Consumers

The Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) has uncovered deceptive marketing tactics by 12 companies in the beauty industry, accusing them of “greenwashing” their products. These firms falsely label their items as “organic” or “chemical-free” without any scientific backing.

Action Taken Against The Beauty Brands

In response to this alarming trend, the CCP has taken action to address these misleading claims. Their initial investigation revealed that these companies were promoting their products as “natural, organic, sustainable, and chemical-free.” All without providing any evidence to support these assertions.

The commission expressed concerns that such misleading marketing deceives consumers. Furthermore, it poses potential health risks to unsuspecting users. The CCP aims to establish a precedent for responsible marketing practices that cater to consumer trust. Notices have been issued to these companies.

The commission highlighted that these companies often omit crucial information about the chemical or synthetic ingredients in their products. Also, they have been using deceptive terminology, or labeling practices to conceal their presence. Claims such as “100% Organic,” “100% Natural,” and “Pakistan’s No.1 Skincare Brand” are often used to lure in consumers. And they do not realize the true composition of these products.

Deceptive marketing practices are prohibited. The CCP is tasked with ensuring fair competition for consumer protection. After that, they emphasized the importance of accurate, reliable, and truthful marketing communications to assist consumers in making informed purchasing decisions.

Moreover, the CCP pledges to enforce the law rigorously. Companies found guilty of deceptive marketing face strict penalties. Additionally, the commission encourages collaboration with consumers, producers, retailers, and other stakeholders to promote fair competition. And also protect consumer rights in the beauty products market.

Consumers are urged to remain vigilant and report any instances of deceptive advertising or false claims promptly. We can ensure transparency and accountability in the beauty industry by working together. Helping safeguard the well-being of consumers across Pakistan.
