PCB’s Decision To Send Wahab Riaz To Maldives Stirs Controversy

pcb-to-remove-wahab-riaz-from-selection-committee

Wahab Riaz, recently removed from his roles as senior team manager and member of the selection committee following Pakistan’s dismal T20 World Cup campaign, is back in the spotlight. This time, he’s headed to the Maldives for an International Cricket Council (ICC) coaching workshop scheduled for July 29-30.

Out of Favor or Still Favored?

The move comes as a surprise to many fans and critics who speculated that Wahab had fallen out of favor with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi.

Wahab’s close ties with Naqvi, stemming from his tenure as a provincial minister during Naqvi’s time as Chief Minister of Punjab, were thought to be severed. But, it appears the bond remains strong.

The PCB announced, “The ICC will hold a two-day High-Performance workshop in Maldives on 29-30 July. Former Test cricketer Wahab Riaz and former international cricketer Shahid Anwar (head coach National Cricket Academy) will participate in the workshop.”

This workshop aims to provide the latest coaching techniques and strategies to identify and nurture grassroots talent. Alongside this, the PCB revealed that General Manager Academies Dr. Imran Abbas will attend a four-day ICC Level-2 Tutors training course in Malé starting July 24.

The course will be conducted by former Pakistan cricketer Iqbal Sikander and former Bangladesh Test captain Amin-ul-Islam, aiming to equip member countries with qualified Level-2 tutors to train coaches.

Controversy Over Wahab Riaz

The real issue, however, lies in Wahab’s qualifications—or lack thereof. Critics argue that Wahab is not a qualified coach and has no coaching experience at the domestic or local levels.

They believe that many seasoned coaches in Pakistan, who regularly work at the grassroots level, were overlooked in favor of Wahab, possibly due to his good relations with the PCB chairman.

This decision has sparked criticism and raised questions about Naqvi’s promises of systemic change within the PCB. The selection of Wahab for this prestigious workshop, despite his lack of coaching credentials, highlights ongoing favoritism and the need for merit-based decisions in Pakistan cricket.

‘Who Else Should Be Captain?’ Former Pakistan Captain Supports Babar Azam

mohsin-naqvi-opens-up-about-babar-azam-replacement-who-should-be-captain-younis-khan-supports-babar-azam

Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan has stepped up in support of current national white-ball captain Babar Azam, emphasizing the lack of viable captaincy options within the country.

Babar Azam has been heavily criticized following Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, where they were eliminated in the group stage. Fans and critics alike have pointed fingers at Babar’s captaincy, calling for his removal.

Younis Khan Voices Support For Babar Azam

However, Younis Khan disagrees with these calls. He believes the real issue lies within Pakistan’s cricket infrastructure, which he says has failed to prepare adequate backup players.

“We give our views very quickly. If we talk about our current team, the players don’t have a fault. Instead, I will blame the infrastructure. If we don’t have the back-up, how will you replace the (out of form) players?” Younis stated in a recent interview.

Younis defended Babar and criticized past management and selection committees for not building a robust pool of players who could step up when needed.

“We generally speak that Babar Azam should not be the captain. If not Babar Azam, who else should be the captain?” he added.

“This isn’t Babar or current selection committee’s fault either. It’s a result of decisions made 5-6 years ago. We failed to build our bench strength,” Younis concluded.

Rapid Changes Hampering Progress

Younis also pointed out the frequent changes in leadership, from the PCB chairman to the captain and even the government, which have disrupted long-term planning.

mohsin-naqvi-urges-fans-support-pakistan-cricket-team

“Changes are happening so quickly—the chairman, captain, and even our government changes so fast. So, who is doing the planning? This has been the case for the past ten years,” he concluded.

Moreover, a decision on Babar Azam’s captaincy is expected soon. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has stated that consultations with former Pakistan cricketers and white-ball head coach Gary Kirsten will guide the final decision.

In the wake of Pakistan’s T20 World Cup exit, the PCB has already taken action. Abdul Razzaq and Wahab Riaz were sacked from the selection committee, and Riaz also lost his job as senior team manager. Additionally, team manager Mansoor Rana was removed from his post.

Rehman explained that, as a writer, his work schedule is often unpredictable and flexible. He emphasized that he respects women and values their contributions, more so than those who are spreading false rumors about him.

Khalil revealed that he was misled into believing that the meeting was for a valid purpose, only to find himself in a critical situation. He explained that he was suffering from health issues, including dermatomyosis, an autoimmune disease that makes him sensitive to sunlight. This condition, combined with a past incident where he was kidnapped and beaten, resulting in swollen eyes, led to his cautious behaviour.

The writer recounted the harrowing experience, stating that when he arrived at the meeting point, the lady locked the door, and six armed men entered, taking control of him. Rehman emphasized that this was the truth and fact, contrary to rumours circulating about the incident.

Rehman also addressed the delay in filing an FIR, attributing it to the trauma he experienced. He explained that his wife encouraged him to report the incident, and he ultimately did so, standing by his commitment to respecting and valuing women.

Pakistan Seeks Power Tariff Reduction From CPEC Projects

The primary challenge for Pakistan stems from the coal power plants installed under the 2015 policy as they were based on Imported fuel.

Islamabad 24 July, 2023: The issue of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) in Pakistan is longstanding, with power plants operating since 1994.

The primary challenge for Pakistan stems from the coal power plants installed under the 2015 policy as they were based on imported fuel. The plants established under the 1994 policy are nearly decommissioned, and those set up in 2002 are expected to be phased out by 2027 or a few years after.

Pakistan faces an annual capacity payment of 2000 billion rupees. Successful negotiations with IPPs may result in savings of only two and a half to three rupees per unit but with this would send a negative signal to foreign investors about Pakistan’s failure to adhere to commercial contracts. Already, one set of negotiations was held in 2021, which resulted in a reduction of the tariff of private IPPs (excluding CPEC). Another negotiations at this time would severely deter any foreign direct investment in Pakistan, especially power sector.

It is necessary to negotiate with CPEC projects to lower their tariff as they did not offer any reduction in 2021.

Craving Ice Cubes? Here’s What You Need To Know

ice cubes

Surely everyone has enjoyed an ice treat from time to time. And how can you not? it’s the perfect summer treat. However, there is a difference between shaved ice and crunching on some ice cubes. And if you have a craving for ice cubes, then something is not okay with your health.

Iron Deficiency Anemia

ice cubes

There’s ample evidence supporting a link between iron deficiency and ice chip cravings. When your blood doesn’t have enough red blood cells, not enough oxygen is carried throughout your body’s tissues. Without iron, these red blood cells can’t be built. While it doesn’t happen to everyone with anemia, it is a relatively common experience that may provide your doctor a clue before deciding to get your blood drawn to truly diagnose it.

Pica

Pica is an eating disorder that involves eating anything with no nutritional value, so ice would fall into this category. Sometimes, pica can look like eating more benign things like ice or more dangerous things like paint, hair, or metal. Getting help in the initial phases is important. Children and pregnant women are most at risk for developing it. Doctors and scientists don’t know exactly what causes pica, but it’s more commonly seen in people with autism, those experiencing malnutrition, or those under high stress.

The Problem with Chronically Chewing Ice Cubes

Ice is just frozen water, so you stay well-hydrated if you chew it frequently. That’s the only real benefit, though. In severe cases, this causes people to miss out on important nutrition and lead to nutrient deficiencies. Ice has no calories, protein, fat, vitamins, or minerals. For some people, chewing ice turns into a replacement for meals and snacks, which is when the risk of nutrient deficiencies is at its highest.

Additionally, you risk damaging your teeth. Even though ice melts, the act of chewing and crunching on it can lead to heightened cold sensitivity, tooth pain, or even structural damage.

Bottom Line of Chewing Ice Cubes

If you have ice cravings that disrupt your life, you must figure out why. If it’s iron deficiency anemia, your doctor and/or dietitian can help you optimize your diet or supplement routine to treat it.

Smart Tips To Use Air Conditioning Efficiently

Source: Climate expert

Air conditioning is essential for home comfort, especially during the hot summer months. However, it can be a significant expense. Here are some effective tips to make your air conditioner more efficient and help reduce your energy bills.

1. Change the Air Filter Every 6 Months

Regularly changing your air filter is crucial for efficient air conditioning. A dirty filter can block airflow, making your system work harder and consume more energy. Replace the filter every six months, or more often if you have pets or allergies. This simple step can lower your air conditioner’s energy consumption by 5 to 15 percent.

How Often Should You Change Your AC Air Filter in Your Home | PHS
Source: PHS

2. Use Smart Thermostats or AC Controllers

Smart thermostats and AC controllers can significantly reduce energy usage. These devices allow you to control your air conditioning remotely, set schedules, and use features like occupancy sensors and geofencing. By automatically adjusting the temperature when you’re not home, you can avoid cooling an empty house, saving energy and money.

3. Set the Right Temperature

Setting your thermostat to the right temperature is key to efficient cooling. The Department of Energy recommends setting your air conditioner to 78 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degree celsius)  when you’re home and need cooling. When you’re away, set it higher or turn it off. This approach can significantly lower your energy use without sacrificing comfort.

4. Use the Right-Size AC for Room Size

Using an appropriately sized air conditioner for your space is crucial. An oversized unit will cycle on and off frequently, wasting energy and failing to dehumidify properly. Conversely, a too-small unit will struggle to cool the space, running continuously and using more power. Use a room size calculator to determine the correct AC size for your needs.

5. Use Sleep Mode at Night

Many air conditioners have a sleep mode that gradually increases the temperature throughout the night. This feature can help you save energy while maintaining comfort, as your body doesn’t require the same level of cooling when you’re sleeping.

By following these tips, you can maximize the efficiency of your air conditioner and enjoy lower energy bills. Regular maintenance, smart technology, and mindful usage are key to staying cool without breaking the bank.

List Of 58 Karachi Restaurants Approved To Collect Increased Service Tax

The Sindh Revenue Board (SRB) has authorized 58 restaurants and hotels in Karachi to collect a 15% service tax on digital payments, up from the previous 8%, thus denying taxpayers a facility originally introduced to promote economic documentation.

Initially, the Sindh budget for the fiscal year 2024-25 (FY25) reduced the Sindh Sales Tax (SST) on restaurant services paid via debit and credit cards from 15% to 8%. However, the SRB’s recent notification allows only a select few establishments to collect the higher 15% tax to enable input adjustment of tax payments.

Only restaurants with an integrated Point of Sale (POS) system are eligible to collect the 15% tax. While there are hundreds of thousands of restaurants in the province, only 1,700—mainly in Karachi—are registered with the SRB. Among these, few are high-end eateries. Tax experts suggest that only these larger establishments with significant market share have been granted permission to collect the higher service tax.

The SRB stated in its notification that out of the more than 1,700 registered restaurants, only 58 had obtained the necessary permission to charge the 15% SST. These restaurants must have POS invoicing systems integrated with the SRB system and comply with the Sindh Sales Tax on Services Act, 2011.

List of restaurants:

This development is part of the SRB’s new working tariff for the tax year 2024-25, incorporating amendments from the provincial budget 2024. According to the notification, the new tax rates apply to all restaurant services, including those at hotels, motels, guest houses, and farmhouses.

Contrary to reports suggesting the SRB has revoked the lower service tax rate for all Karachi restaurants, the board clarified that this facility remains operative. The SRB emphasized that restaurants wishing to apply the standard 15% SST rate on digital payments must obtain permission per rule 42(1)(b) of the Sindh Sales Tax on Services Rules, 2011.

The SRB also advised customers to verify the applicable SST rate before dining out by visiting the SRB website or requesting written permission from the restaurant.

But here’s where things get tricky. As Zara’s popularity grew, so did the number of copycats. New accounts popped up, each claiming to be “Pakistan’s first AI influencer.” One account, @shabnam_xai, even went as far as copying Zara’s viral video and getting news outlets to publish their false claim.

Afghanistan Confirms Champions Trophy Participation in Pakistan

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has put an end to the rumours about their potential decision not to travel to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Scheduled for February to March 2025, the Champions Trophy is set to be hosted in Pakistan.

The Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled from February 19 to March 9, will feature eight top cricketing nations: Pakistan, Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, and South Africa.

However, India’s participation remains uncertain as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) seeks government approval for the visit to the neighbouring country. Amidst this uncertainty, some reports suggested that Afghanistan might follow India’s lead and opt out of travelling to Pakistan.

ACB’s Assurance

In a recent meeting during the ICC’s annual conference in Colombo, ACB chairman Mirwais Ashraf and CEO Naseeb Khan assured PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi of Afghanistan’s commitment to the tournament.

“Our team will indeed travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy 2025,” they emphasized, dismissing the false reports and making it clear that Afghanistan’s stance is not influenced by India’s security concerns.

Though Afghanistan’s participation was never seriously in doubt, the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan regarding the Champions Trophy have fueled much speculation. The ACB’s reassurance allowed the PCB to breathe a sigh of relief amidst the uncertainty.

A Landmark Event for Pakistan

If the Champions Trophy 2025 proceeds with all matches in Pakistan, it would mark a significant milestone for the country. Pakistan last hosted an ICC event in 1996, co-hosting the Cricket World Cup with India and Sri Lanka.

Since then, the nation’s cricketing landscape has faced numerous challenges, primarily due to security concerns that have limited international teams’ willingness to tour.

ICC Allocates Extra Funds For India Matches Outside Pakistan In Champions Trophy

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has allocated supplementary funds to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the Champions Trophy 2025, considering the reluctance of India, who are pushing to play their matches at a neutral venue.

Meanwhile, the PCB has handed over the responsibility of persuading the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to the ICC to ensure India’s participation in the mega-event in Pakistan.

Champions Trophy Plans in Motion

Scheduled for the first quarter of next year, the Champions Trophy has seen its budget approved during ICC meetings in Colombo. However, the schedule and format discussions were put on hold, according to a PCB insider.

An Indian media report revealed that the PCB has already submitted all necessary details in its expression of interest document to the ICC.

Now, the ICC is responsible for finalizing and announcing the tournament schedule. This includes securing confirmation from the BCCI regarding the Indian team’s travel to Pakistan.

Hybrid Hosting Model Considered

The Champions Trophy might adopt a hybrid hosting model, with some matches potentially played outside Pakistan. This consideration arises due to India’s reluctance to play in Pakistan.

To address this, the ICC has included supplementary expenses in its tournament budget, allocating additional funds to the PCB to cover the logistical and financial challenges posed by India’s potential absence.

PCB’s Firm Stance

Despite these reports about a hybrid model, the PCB remains firm on hosting the entire tournament in Pakistan. Historically, political tensions and security concerns have strained cricketing relations between India and Pakistan, making these diplomatic efforts crucial.

During the 2023 ODI Asia Cup, India played its games in Sri Lanka under a ‘Hybrid Model,’ highlighting the complexities of the situation. According to the draft schedule of the Champions Trophy, all of India’s matches, including a potential semi-final and final, are slated for Lahore, with the highly anticipated India vs. Pakistan match set for March 1.

The upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 is not just a cricket tournament but a significant diplomatic challenge. The stakes are high, and the outcome will undoubtedly impact the future of cricketing ties between these two neighbouring nations.
