KMC Fixes Rates for Graves at Rs14,300 in Karachi (1)

In a bid to address the issue of overcharging at city cemeteries, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab has directed the installation of banners across all registered cemeteries in the city. These banners will display the fixed burial rates set by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), which are set at Rs14,300.

As part of the initiative, Cemeteries Director Sarwar Alam visited KMC-operated cemeteries and instructed staff to adhere to KMC’s bylaws and prescribed rates. He stressed that no individual would be allowed to work at the cemeteries without proper KMC registration.

Alam also made it clear that strict enforcement of these regulations would take place and any instance of overcharging would lead to stern action. This move follows reports of mafia groups operating at various city cemeteries, extorting extra money from citizens.

In response, the mayor initiated action. Now banners with the official rates are prominently displayed at KMC-run cemeteries to ensure transparency and prevent illegal practices.

ANP Leader Alleges Sale of Dog and Donkey Meat in Markets

ANP Leader Alleges Sale of Dog and Donkey Meat in Markets

Awami National Party (ANP) leader Aimal Wali alleged that dog, donkey, and frog meat is being sold in various areas of the country, raising serious concerns about food safety. Speaking during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on National Food Security, Wali claimed that substandard and harmful products, including plastic rice and adulterated milk, are widely available in the market, endangering public health.

He revealed that milk production in the country accounts for only 22 percent of the national consumption, while the remaining 78 percent is chemically adulterated white liquid. “The milk consumed in the country is mostly synthetic and laced with hazardous chemicals,” he added.

Senator Dinesh Kumar echoed the concerns, pointing out the absence of mechanisms to ensure the quality of rice consumed. “There is no system to verify whether the rice people are eating is safe,” he said. Kumar further emphasised the urgent need for regulatory reforms.

In response to these alarming revelations, the committee formed a sub-committee to develop policies addressing the country’s food security issues. The committee also ensured strict checks on food quality standards.

This is not the first time such claims have been made. In 2018, then Interior Minister Shehryar Afridi had disclosed that donkey, dog, and even pork meat was being sold in parts of Islamabad. The lack of stringent monitoring and enforcement of food safety regulations has allowed such practices to persist, experts say.

Temple of Queen Hatshepsut Reveals 1,500 Decorated Blocks

Archaeologists have uncovered intact portions of Queen Hatshepsut’s valley temple foundation in Luxor, along with the nearby tomb of Queen Teti Sheri, grandmother of Ahmose I. The discovery, announced by archaeologist Zahi Hawass, includes over 1,500 decorated stone blocks from the 18th dynasty temple. Hawass described the temple as “the most beautiful scene I’ve ever seen.”.

A limestone tablet bearing the name of Senmut, Hatshepsut’s architect, was also found. These findings shed light on the architectural brilliance of the pharaonic era. Hatshepsut, one of the few women to rule Egypt, died around 1458 B.C. Her valley temple was demolished centuries later.

The discoveries, made during excavations ongoing since 2022, highlight Egypt’s rich heritage and offer a glimpse into the New Kingdom era, or the golden age of pharaohs.

Rejection Ratio of UAE Visas for Pakistanis Soars to 99pc

Rejection Ratio of UAE Visas for Pakistanis Soars to 99pc

Pakistani travellers seeking visas to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are facing unprecedented challenges as the rejection rate has reached an alarming 99%. This steep increase in visa rejections applies across visit, work, and business visas, causing widespread concern and frustration.

Stricter Requirements and Financial Burdens

The UAE government has recently tightened its visa application regulations. Applicants must now provide a bank statement showing at least Rs1 million, along with confirmed air tickets and hotel bookings. Such stringent requirements have not only reduced the chances of visa approval but have also imposed significant financial burdens on applicants.

According to the Travel Agents Association of Pakistan (TAAP), many applicants face monetary losses ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 UAE dirhams if their visas are rejected. This includes non-refundable fees for tickets and bookings, compounding the stress for those seeking to visit or work in the UAE.

Effects on Pakistani Workers and Travellers

The UAE has long been a prime destination for Pakistani workers and travellers. Thousands rely on job opportunities in the UAE in sectors like construction, hospitality, and retail. The recent restrictions threaten the livelihoods of countless workers and disrupt business and personal travel plans.

Sadiq Sabir, an Executive Board member of TAAP, condemned the situation and called for diplomatic talks with the UAE from Pakistani authorities. “The sudden increase in visa rejections is creating economic and emotional distress for many Pakistanis,” he said.

Possible Reasons for the Bans

Although the UAE has not given explicit reasons for these new restrictions, experts believe that political or security considerations might be behind it. Changes in labour and migration policies can also be a factor. These developments may also be the UAE’s move to favour other nationalities with visas or manage incoming labour following economic changes.

A Call for Diplomatic Action

Pakistan faces mounting pressure on its government to resolve the issue. Diplomatic engagement with the UAE is an essential step towards finding a balance between the UAE’s security needs and the demands of Pakistani travellers and workers.

For now, it is recommended that potential travellers should weigh the cost of applying for a UAE visa and consider alternative destinations for work and leisure. The situation only highlights the need to strengthen bilateral ties to avoid long-term impacts on the mobility and economic stability of Pakistani citizens.

“Without AI, the robotic arm is just an arm,” explained Ruben Rodriguez, Senior Manager of Global PR at Roborock. The incorporation of machine learning helped ensure that the device could recognise, adapt, and respond to action to provide flawless cleaning and organisation.

Tombot’s Robotic Dog, Jennie

In a heartwarming display of AI in healthcare, Tombot introduced Jennie, a robotic dog designed to comfort individuals with dementia. Unlike traditional robotic pets, Jennie uses touch sensors and voice recognition to provide companionship, reducing symptoms like anxiety and loneliness.

“She doesn’t walk to avoid tripping hazards but can stay on a person’s lap for hours, offering round-the-clock comfort,” shared Marissa Steingold, Marketing Executive at Tombot.

molluSCAN: Sensing Water Quality through Molluscs

The French firm molluSCAN fused marine biology with AI in monitoring water quality through molluscs. They act as living sensors that monitor the pollutant in real time.

If the molluscs are subjected to pollution, “our system notifies clients instantaneously,” Ludovic Quinault, chief executive officer says. This kind of approach can easily revolutionise environmental safety early warnings.

AI for Mobility Beyond Automobiles

AI was going to change mobility beyond self-driving cars. Gary Shapiro, President of the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), said that AI is now being integrated into diverse vehicles and systems. From scooters to delivery drones, AI enhances efficiency, personalisation, and safety.

AI for Personalised Technology

AI is not only making products better but transforming them into tools designed for specific needs. Integration of AI in laptops and personal computers has heightened their functionality. Companies like Nvidia are focusing on AI-powered PCs that offer unmatched personalisation.

Nvidia unveiled Project Digits Personal AI Supercomputer at CES, an emblem of this movement. The form factor is petite yet potent. It is great for more involved tasks like processing natural language, or even elaborate simulations; all in 200 billion AI parameters.

Controversy over the Need For AI

Where proponents hail AI’s transformative potential, detractors would say some applications overemphasise the importance of AI.

“There’s a lot of AI looking for problems to solve,” observed Carolina Milanesi, a technology expert. She pointed out that some of the devices were solving problems that didn’t necessarily need solutions, which marked a larger discussion about meaningful innovation versus gimmickry.

CES 2025 solidifies AI as a dominant force, giving us a glimpse into a future where technology not only does things but also anticipates our needs. Not every product will stick, but the event lays the groundwork for meaningful AI integration in everyday life.

Brain Scans Show Men and Women are Wired Differently

Brain Scans Show Men and Women Are Wired Differently

Have you ever wondered if men and women are truly wired differently? A groundbreaking study from the Autism Research Centre at the University of Cambridge has revealed that sex differences in brain structure exist from birth. These findings could reshape how we think about brain development, neurodiversity, and even early childhood learning.

Key Differences Between Men and Women Infant Brains

The study analysed data from over 500 newborns, making it the largest research effort of its kind. These researchers employed MRI scans from the Developing Human Connectome Project to examine the brains of infants shortly after they were born. Then, they found clear differences in brain structure between male and female infants, even when accounting for factors like birth weight and body size!

On average, male brains had a greater total volume than female brains. However, when this size difference was adjusted, the results were different. Female infants showed significantly more grey matter, while male infants had more white matter.

Areas of the female brain linked to memory and emotional regulation show more prominent grey matter, which processes information, perception, and cognition. On the other hand, males had larger volumes in grey matter regions related to sensory processing and motor control. White matter, which connects different parts of the brain, was also more prevalent in male brains.

Yumnah Khan, the PhD student who led the study, explained that these differences likely reflect prenatal brain development influenced by biological sex. She noted that environmental experiences also play a role in shaping the brain over time.

Read More: Oxford-Bound: Ismail Global And Hamid Ismail Foundation Support Junaid Memon’s Pursuit Of Groundbreaking Engineering Research

Importance of the Research

This research is important because it offers a deeper understanding of how sex differences emerge in the brain. Supervisors of the study emphasised that these findings are specific to the brain itself and not just a result of the general size differences between males and females.

This has provided fascinating insights into the biological differences that exist between men and women from the day they’re born. While this research doesn’t prove one to be better than the other, it shows factual differences. By studying these variations, researchers hope to uncover more about conditions like autism and find ways to support children’s unique developmental journeys.

World’s Most Powerful Passports in 2025: Where does Pakistan rank?

World’s Most Powerful Passports in 2025: Where does Pakistan rank?
Source: Dialogue

According to the first Henley Passport Index for 2025, Pakistan continues to feature among the nations with the least powerful passports (103rd position). This suggests that it faces ongoing difficulties when it comes to international mobility for its citizens.

The Global Leaders in Passport Power

The Henley Passport Index, compiled by Henley & Partners, ranks passports according to the number of destinations their holders can visit without a prior visa. Singapore is at the top of the list with its passport providing visa-free access to a record 195 countries.

Singapore now has the most powerful passport in the world, with Japan bumped from first to third, the UK moving UP to fourth and the U.S slipping to eighth | Daily Mail
Source: Daily Mall

Next in line is Japan, which has the second position with its citizens being allowed visa-free entry into 193 countries. South Korea, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Finland are at the third rank, with their passports giving access to 192 countries. These rankings indicate the benefits of global trust and diplomatic strength.

Pakistan’s Rank: Challenges in International Mobility

On the other end of the spectrum, Pakistan ranks 103rd, tied with Yemen. Pakistani passport holders can access only 33 countries without a visa. This stark disparity reflects broader socio-economic and geopolitical challenges, limiting opportunities for global travel and collaboration.

Read More: How to Apply for a 10 Year Passport in Pakistan

Afghanistan is last in the ranking at 106th, having visa-free access to only 27 destinations. Neighbouring countries, including Iran (96th with 45 destinations) and India (85th with 60 destinations), rank considerably higher, indicating a regional gap in mobility.

Interestingly, Bangladesh (102nd) and Nepal (102nd) just beat Pakistan, whereas Somalia (102nd) finished in the lower rung. It is interesting how these rankings show regional trends where travel opportunities are rather restricted for South Asian nations and those experiencing conflict.

Why Passport Power Matters

For Pakistan, this weak ranking has real-life implications. Low mobility affects personal travel, opportunities for education, business, and cultural exchange. For Pakistan to move up in its ranking, it would require persistent diplomatic efforts to strengthen international relations and to work on perceptions regarding security and governance.

While the Henley Passport Index draws attention to the inequality of travel privileges across the world, it also challenges countries to work towards better accessibility for their citizens. Improved mobility can lead to stronger economic ties, cultural exchange, and global partnerships, thereby brightening the future of the nation on the international level.

As 2025 unfolds, improving passport power should be a key goal for policymakers, ensuring that Pakistan’s global presence reflects its aspirations.

And who can forget his 237 not out against the West Indies during the 2015 World Cup? That blistering knock remains the second-highest individual score in ODI history—a performance etched into the memories of cricket fans around the world.

Guptill may be retiring from international cricket, but he’s far from done. Currently playing for Auckland in the Super Smash, he’s also signed up for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) draft, where Islamabad United holds the option to retain him.

This means fans around the world can still enjoy his powerful batting and stunning stroke play. His retirement isn’t the end—it’s a new chapter in a different arena.

Sitting for Too Long? Here’s What it’s Doing to Your Spine

Sitting for Too Long? Here’s What it’s Doing to Your Spine

Most people, it seems, spend time sitting down on most days. Be it sitting for hours in the office, binge-watching TV shows or scrolling through their phones with absolutely no end in mind; it has become a modern-day life norm to be sitting for prolonged periods of time.

Ever thought of how this habit affects the spine? Spoiler alert: it’s not great. As Dr. James Levine, inventor of the treadmill desk, famously said, “Sitting is the new smoking.”

Why Sitting is a Problem for Your Spine

Long-term sitting is bad for the normal alignment of your spine. This is because the human body is not meant to be motionless for hours at a time. Sitting for long periods compresses spinal discs, which are gel-like cushions between vertebrae, causing aches and even effects of long-term damage.

Hunching or slumping over a desk, straining your back muscles, and increasing the pressure on the spine add up over time and can lead to conditions like herniated discs and chronic back pain.

What Happens Inside Your Spine

Your spine isn’t just a stack of bones; it’s a complex system of nerves, muscles, and tissues. These are some of the things that may happen if you sit for too long:

  • Reduced blood flow
  • Increased pressure on discs
  • Muscle weakness

These changes might not cause immediate pain, but the effects add up over time. Without intervention, the spine’s structure can deteriorate.

Common Spinal Issues Linked to Sitting

If sitting for hours is your norm, here are some conditions you might encounter:

  • Lower back pain
  • Sciatica
  • Cervical strain
  • Spinal misalignment

How to Protect Your Spine While Sitting

The good news? You don’t have to swear off sitting entirely. By making small changes, you can mitigate the damage;

  • Adjust your workspace to become more comfortable
  • Take regular breaks
  • Strengthen your core
  • Use a supportive chair

The Benefits of Breaking the Sitting Cycle

These simple adjustments not only affect the spine but also improve your overall health. Breathing and digestion usually get better due to the improvements in posture. Regular movements are good for preventing heart disease and diabetes. You may be surprised, during the day, how much more energised and focused you feel.

Sitting for a longer duration is a silent killer of your spine. Awareness and a few lifestyle changes will help a lot to save your back. Your spine literally is the backbone of your health; so get up and stretch for a little while and pamper it with care. Movement, as Dr. Levine says, is the best way to prevent the ill effects of sitting.

Will Saim Ayub Be Ready for the Champions Trophy?

PCB Sends Saim Ayub to London for Urgent Medical Treatment

As the countdown to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 continues, Pakistan cricket fans are holding their breath over the fitness of talented top-order batter Saim Ayub.

The 22-year-old left-hander, who fractured his ankle on the opening day of the Cape Town Test against South Africa, remains in doubt for the marquee tournament. While initially ruled out for six weeks, his recovery journey has taken him to London for specialized treatment and evaluation.

Medical Updates on Saim Ayub

On Wednesday, Ayub underwent an initial assessment by Dr. Lucky Jeyaseelan, a renowned trauma and orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon in London. He was accompanied by Pakistan’s assistant coach, Azhar Mahmood, who has been closely monitoring the situation.

A second evaluation with another specialist, Dr. David, is scheduled for Thursday. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has emphasized that any decision about Ayub’s inclusion in the Champions Trophy squad will hinge on the outcomes of these crucial consultations.

PCB’s Commitment to Saim Ayub

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has reassured fans of the board’s unwavering support for Ayub. Describing him as a “valuable asset” for Pakistan cricket, Naqvi highlighted the importance of providing world-class medical care to ensure the young batter gets the best chance of recovery.

Ayub’s potential absence from the Champions Trophy would be a significant blow to Pakistan’s top order. Known for his composure and flair, the youngster has shown glimpses of brilliance in his short career, and fans were eager to see him shine on home soil during this high-profile tournament.

The Champions Trophy Timeline

The clock is ticking for the PCB, as the deadline for submitting preliminary squads for the Champions Trophy is just days away—January 12. Teams can make changes to their squads until February 11 without needing ICC approval, but the tournament period officially begins on February 12.

The action kicks off on February 19, with hosts Pakistan taking on New Zealand in the curtain-raiser at Karachi. The month-long spectacle promises 15 thrilling matches, bringing together the world’s best teams in a fierce battle for the coveted trophy.

The PCB is in a race against time to finalize its squad, but Ayub’s situation adds a layer of complexity. If the medical reports provide a green light, the young batter could find himself back in contention. However, if his recovery timeline stretches further, Pakistan will need to explore other options to bolster their top order.

Apple Denies Siri Data Misuse After $95M Settlement

Apple Denies Siri Data Misuse After $95M Settlement

Apple has denied allegations of misusing Siri voice assistant data after agreeing to a $95 million settlement in a class action lawsuit. The case stemmed from claims that Siri was unintentionally activated by “hot words” like “Hey Siri” and recorded private conversations. These were then allegedly shared with third parties, including advertisers, without user consent. Apple emphasised that it has never sold user data or used it for targeted marketing purposes.

In its statement addressing public concerns, Apple clarified: “Apple has never used Siri data to build marketing profiles, never made it available for advertising, and never sold it to anyone for any purpose.” The company stressed that Siri only accesses its servers in real-time to deliver accurate results, using minimal data to perform these tasks.

Apple further stated that Siri audio recordings are not retained unless users explicitly opt in. For those who do opt in, recordings are used strictly to improve Siri’s functionality. Apple reiterated its commitment to protecting personal data, describing privacy as a cornerstone of its philosophy.

The case has drawn comparisons to a similar lawsuit against Google over its Voice Assistant. This case is currently pending in federal court in San Jose, California, involving the same law firms representing the plaintiffs in the Apple lawsuit. Eligible Apple users may receive up to $20 per Siri-enabled device, including iPhones and Apple Watches, under the settlement terms.
