The Best Places to Visit for Summer 2016

The Great Barrier Reef has been named the best vacation destination in the world in a newly released ranking published by US News & World Report.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site, which stretches for more than 2,000 km along the coastline of Queensland and is visible from space, was ranked the world’s best place to visit in 2016.

Rounding out the top three spots are Paris and Bora Bora in French Polynesia.

The Great Barrier Reef is home to the world’s most extensive coral reef ecosystem, with 400 types of coral, 1,500 species of fish and 4,000 types of mollusk, covering an area of 348,000 square kilometers.

Great Barrier Reef

Every year, it’s estimated that 1.9 million people visit the area. But with the devastating effects of climate change and rising water temperatures continuing to place increased pressure on one of earth’s most extraordinary ecosystems, scientists warn that our time with the natural wonder is running out.

In April, the Australian Research Council warned that 500 coral reefs from Cairns to Papua New Guinea experienced the worst mass bleaching on record.

Meanwhile, despite the spate of terror attacks and labor strikes to beset the City of Light, Paris managed to slip into second place for the best vacation destination of 2016.

French Polynesia

Currently, the French capital is hosting the UEFA Euro soccer games.

The ranking weighs editors’ and voters’ choices equally.

NADRA To Re-Verify CNICs of 180 Million Pakistani Citizens: SMS Service Launched to Re-Verify Family Members

nadra-orders-re-verification-of-CNICs

UPDATE: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) launched a campaign on Sunday for re-verification of registered families. As a part of this campaign, the head of the family can verify the number of family members registered under their family tree through an SMS service. The service will allow Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) holders to verify by sending an SMS to 8008, Propakistani reported.

With the help of this respective service, families that are registered will be able to file complain and report the individuals to authorities who are illicitly registered under their family names. From July 1st omwards, NADRA will be sending SMS to family heads from 8008 in order to confirm their registered numbers.

You can also verify the status by sending your  CNIC number to 8008 and receiving all the registered persons’ names in your family.

The government on Monday has approved the re-verification system of CNICs all across Pakistan, ARY News reports. Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan has given a final approval for re-verification of national CNICs to be launched on July 1st, all across Pakistan.

NADRA is to scrutinize the CNICs of million Pakistanis, approved by Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Interior Minister.  The registration authority will be sending member details to each of the family heads via an SMS. The family is to verify that the mentioned people are part of the family.

The person will also highlight if a stranger has been listed as a family member in NADRA.

NADRA is to make 10,000 calls and send out 300,000 SMSs to Pakistani citizens on a daily basis for the re-verification of CNICs, said the minister.

Helpline and special telecentres will also be introduced by the government for facilitation of people. Residents can easily inform about suspected ID cards at these special telecentres.

After the discovery of Pakistani identity card and passport from Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Akhtar Mansoor, several questions have been raised on the credibility of National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA). In the midst of confusion and criticism, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has ordered re-verification of CNICs across the country.

He has given 48-hour deadline to NADRA to prepare a road-map to initiate re-verification of national identity cards of over 180 million people.

chaudhry nisar

“NADRA has 48 hours to submit a work plan with a set deadline for initiation of national plan for re-verification of CNICs across the country,” the minister said while chairing a meeting at NADRA Headquarters.

The meeting was also attended by NADRA chairman, DG Passport and Immigration officials of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

“This measure would help us to ensure that in future no alien will be able to use Pakistani CNIC and passport, besides removal of those aliens currently holding Pakistani CNIC,” he added.

The minister directed the authorities to ensure that general public remains at ease and re-verification is done in cordial and friendly way.

He added that there would be zero tolerance for corruption at all levels, and inefficient and corrupt officials would be removed from the service immediately.

Toyota Prius Car In Pakistan: Indus Motors Fails to Sell a Single Prius Since 2013

Toyota-Prius

Toyota Prius is one of the most successful hybrid cars in the world with above 5 million of its units being sold out. But, surprisingly not a single Prius car has been sold in Pakistan since December 2013 by Toyota Indus Motors – distributor of Toyota vehicles in Pakistan.

According to the details, Toyota had set a target of selling 25 Prius every year that looked like a possible target to achieve, despite the fact that the car was priced too high (PKR 4.5 million). The company had to face widespread criticism by public and the media because the used imported Toyota Prius was being sold at PKR 2.5 million when the third generation Prius was launched in Pakistan.

Toyota Prius.Brandsynario

Back in 2013, Toyota announced import of Prius in the form of completely built units (CBUs); initially 17 cars were imported as a result. However, not a single unit was imported as the company stuck to the old price, costing them a lot in the future.

Parvez Ghias, CEO of Toyota Indus revealed the following about the failure of company:

“We produced 17 Prius cars, not one of them got picked. Used Prius is considered better and cheaper than new Prius. Even within Toyota, there are versions of Prius, we are looking to see if there are any smaller car hybrids CBU that we could bring.”

However, it might sound odd that despite such a sorry figure in sales (no sales of CBU Prius), Toyota intends to import smaller hybrid cars in the country. The company is eyeing tax reductions so that it can launch a cheaper hybrid car in the country in the next few months.

Suicide Squad Movie Winning Social Media Race Ahead of Release

SUICIDE-SQUAD

Upcoming action movie ‘Suicide Squad” generated the most online attention off the summer film schedule last week. The Warner Bros. anti-hero movie featuring a host of DC Comics super villains recruited by a secret government agency was the subject of the most social media conversations at 66K from June 17-23, Deadline reports.

The data is taken from comScore’s PreAct.SUICIDE-SQUAD

The film, which is set for release on August 5, is generating more buzz on social media than Disney’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” which is being released on December 16, and Warner Bros.’s Harry Potter spin-off “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”

Summer Vacation 2016; What You Need To Take With You

With summer upon us, if you are those lucky few that have already booked a holiday or are thinking of nabbing some last minute sun you may be in need of a guide to know what to pack. As there is nothing more annoying then flying off on a much needed holiday then realising you have forgotten those all-important essentials.

Documents

Unfortunately you won’t be able to get very far if you forget your plane tickets or your passport, so the best thing to do is print off all your important documents and ensure that they are all up-to-date. These documents will include a valid passport, plane tickets, insurance as well as anything else you may need including transfers and hotel passes. Collect all the important documents and place them in a folder or a clear wallet as that way you know they will all be secure and all in one place.

Swimwear

If your holiday destination is somewhere warm and sunny then you will need to pack all swimwear. This may be a few dozen bikinis, a trusty swimming costume or a range of designer swimming trunks. Either way your swimwear will be one of the must-have essentials packed in your suitcase so you can cool off in the hotel pool or even go snorkelling in the sea.

Accessories

This can be a range of things from on-trend sunglasses to shield your peepers when the sun is too bright to contact lenses if you struggle to see without your glasses. Other important accessories should include sun hats, as midday the sun really is at its strongest so you will need something to keep you covered to avoid getting sunstroke. Sun hats and sunglasses come in all styles and colours so you can get a pair or two that suit your tastes, whatever they may be.

beach bag and beach items and sun block

Toiletries

If you happen to be travelling in a group or as a couple then you can share the load and the amount between you all. The most important of toiletries include sun cream, one with a high factor to protect your skin as well as after sun to moisturiser your skin as it can get severally dehydrated after a day in the sun.

The most obvious will include shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, moisturiser, wet wipes- which will help with everything from on the plane to wiping the kids messy faces after their ice creams. Depending who you are travelling with will depend on the toiletries and the amount you may need, but remember if you forget anything you should be able to find an alternative in most shops no matter where you are traveling too.

Clothing

When going on holiday, nearly everyone tends to over pack and with a tight weight-limit you will need to pack like you’re on a mission. The basics will include swimwear, underwear, and a set of clothes for the day and the evening. Try to pack outfits that you can mix and match, ideally you will only need to pack two pairs of shoes, a pair for during the day and maybe a smarter pair for when you are out dinning in restaurants. In the event that you do forget something, there is no need to worry as you will be on holiday, so relax and just enjoy it.

According to the reports, Fakhr-e-Alam in his resignation letter has demanded complete security and safety for the artists residing in Pakistan.

FAKHAR-E-ALAM

While talking to Shahzeb Khanzada on Geo News, he said that the artists and citizens in Pakistan do not ask for any protocol like politicians, but providing safety and security is the biggest responsibility of the government.

Have a look at his resignation letter here:

The resignation letter of Fakhr-e-Alam, not only demanded strict security measures but it also stated how futile it is to work with the government authorities, if people like him or the citizens are not allowed to raise questions.

He raised this point in his resignation letter due to the bogus comments of the PPP leader, Shela Raza about the talented artist.

Fakhre-e-Alam signed his resignation letter with good hopes and looks forward to amendments in the near future.

Best Ramadan 2016 TVC Roundup

There is no doubt that that festive communication design and development has become a big industry in Pakistan for which tearjerker and heartwarming storylines are the most preferred choices. Things are changing fast. Good marketing is considered these days to be about a dialogue with customers, rather than a monologue to them.

Big ideas still matter but they are being usurped by the long idea that can carry a conversation across social networks, paid media, owned channels and earned media. Most of the ideas are now mini-movies because of a powerful player in the online advertising game.

Surf Excel Ramadan TVC 2016 Wins Over Millions of Hearts!

In our very own Urdu language, people use a phrase quite often to convey a simple truth about the preeminence of days and nights over one another: “Kabhi ke din barre aur kabhi ki raatein” [At times days are longer, at others, nights]. Similarly, when it comes to a festive or holiday season in any religion or geography, all months are not treated equal. At least, one month has superiority over the rest.

The ninth month in Islamic calendar (lunar Hijri calendar) is the month for which Muslims all around the world keep themselves waiting for the whole year.    Ramazan is a huge annual event and, therefore, it gets everything disproportionate in terms of quality as well quantity including spending on advertising because of greater ROI.

5 Reasons To Love Rafhan’s Heartwarming Ramadan Ad

Here, we have compiled a selection of such mini-movies turn Ramazan 2016 TVCs exclusively for you with our evaluation as well as judgment based on popular feedback from viewers who are consumers:

1]. Naya Zamana. Naee Batein. [ QMobile Corporate Ramazan TVC 2016]

Keeping to their Ramazan theme, QMobile’s message is about an emotional daughter-father story of cricket maniac Sara and Mr. Iqbal – a traditionalist father, who wishes to see his daughter’s place only at home. Sara continues to pursue her dream with the support of her mother. Mr. Iqbal is a gentleman and loving father, ultimately retreats from his stance and accepts new realities by congratulating his daughter on her team’s success. The jingle ‘nanhi si aik kali thi meri…’stirs hearts of millions of those who love, respect and value daughters. It also reinforces the idea i.e. new age, new conversations.

2]. Madad Aik Ibadat. [Surf Excel Ramazan TVC2016]

Keeping to their long idea ‘Dirt is good’ [daagh to achay hotay hein!], Unilever Pakistan connects its detergent brand ‘Surf Excel’ emotionally through effective advertainment. What these beautiful kids teach us can simply be expressed in the word of William Arthur Ward:    “Do more than belong: participate. Do more than care: help. Do more than believe: practice. Do more than be fair: be kind. Do more than forgive: forget. Do more than dream: work.” Again, the jingle ‘aaj meri paishani pe qismat ne chooma hai…’sums up the entire story excellently well.

3]. Liter of Light. [Pepsi Ramazan TVC2016]

As simple as elegant, ‘Liter of Light’ campaign was, in fact, launched in 2015 by PepsiCo Pakistan, which proved to be a great success and helped manage thousands of lives in rural Pakistan by lightening up their villages particularly during sehar and iftaar. This Ramazan the campaign is again invigorated with the same noble cause by endorsement of celebrities like Hamza Ali Abbasi and music maestro Abida Parveen as her voice itself worth more than the face of any other celebrity across the borders. Her soul touching theme song ‘Noor-e-Azal’ mesmerizes the whole atmosphere whenever this purposeful ad film airs or broadcasts.

4]. Pyar ki Mithas [ Rafhan Ramazan TVC 2016]

A treat to watch every time, Rafhan’s Ramazan specific latest TVC makes use of the perfect ingredient of spirituality and mother-daughter relationship without employing any magic of brand endorsements, tempting food shots or appealing jingles. Beautiful storyline narrates and portrays all the emotional elements of mother-daughter-grandmother everlasting troika. Rafhan has made a creative attempt to discover the sweet side of Ramazan through its dessert range by not just sharing love, but also the burdens of your loved ones.

5]. Maa Kay Haathon Ka Pyaar – Tang Ramzan TVC 2016

Created in 1957, “Tang” world’s favorite powdered beverage is now available in 5 fruity flavors in Pakistan. TANG is trademark of Kraft Food Holdings, Ins., [USA] and is marketed here in our country by Clover Pakistan Limited. As far as Tang Ramazan TVC is concerned, it is simply inspiring.  For the whole month of Ramazan, Clover Pakistan’s Tang TVC continued with the successful motivational message. It is all about sharing and promoting something positive through strong mother-kids unconditional love and affection.

6]. Ramazan ki Khushiyan –Sensodyne Ramazan TVC 2016

Toothpaste brand Sensodyne stands for sensitivity. Since, the blessed month brings with it the spirit of goodness and sensitivity towards other fellow beings so why not this spirit and sensitivity passes on through an effective message.  Have a look at Sensodyne Ramazan TVC, which serves as a donation drive while nurturing the spirit of charity and generosity by bringing a shocking state of affairs of hard working children from the less-fortunate and underprivileged families. It is really sensitive ad film.

7]. Aao baant lein maza har lamhay ka-Coca Cola Ramzan TVC 2016

Continued with its long and lasting idea of sharing happiness and love, Coke’s message in this Ramazan dedicated to mothers who are always ready to sacrifice everything for the joy of her children. With its impressive jingle, the global brand pulls the hearts of millions of Pakistanis in any age group or background when it echoes ‘tu hai maa, tujh se hai sara jahan…[ you are my mom, you are my world…].

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6mMdWWDK-U

8]. Allah Miyan Mujhe Ghar Wapas Jana Hai- SKMCH Ramazan TVC 2016

Leveraging on Huzaifa’s desire and aspiration through a supplication to Allah the Almighty in the form of a monologue, SKMCH’s TVC serves as a donation drive while nurturing the spirit of charity and generosity so that cancer patients as young as Huzaifa can live their dreams. AD film is heart grabbing and its call to action is quite appealing.

9: Behter Kal Ki Umeed-Ufone Ramazan TVC 2016

Borrowed from an Iranian idea of Deewar-e-Meharbani, this Ramazan Ufone promotes the initiative of two young guys of Peshawar to spread kindness within the community through establishing Wall of Kindness without much hullabaloo. There is a series of TVCs appealing people to work voluntarily within the community because charity is not just to donate in monetary form it can be in the form of goods or non-perishable food items to needy and deserving people and it is quite possible through mutual support and cooperation.

Twitter Adds Stickers With a Searchable Difference

Social messaging network Twitter has inaugurated its own spin on digital stickers, and it’s one that lets users see how other people are using the same picture enhancements.

Twitter is rolling out a library of “hundreds of accessories, emoji, and props” that can be superimposed on existing photos and images multiple times, resized, rotated and, finally, searched.

Though the search feature depends on people being able to tell the difference between a sticker and the background image that it is covering; tapping or clicking on a sticker leads through to its own unique timeline collecting uses of that sticker from across the social media network.

Twitter Launches New App for Celebrities to Engage with Fans

Though not categorized in the same way, a sticker acts as a visual hashtag, and special collections (such as the Start of Summer and Graduation sticker sets introduced June 27) could conceivably lend themselves to branding opportunities.

The feature is being rolled out on iOS and Android over the next few weeks, with users of Twitter.com also able to view and click the stickers.

Mohammad-Amir

Mohammad Amir can still become the best bowler in the world despite serving a five-year ban for spot-fixing, Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq said Monday.

Left-arm fast bowler Amir, 24, is expected to make his return to Test cricket next month against England at Lord’s, where his exciting career came to a shuddering halt in 2010.

During that year’s Test against England at Lord’s, Amir and Pakistan new-ball partner Mohammad Asif bowled no-balls to order on the instructions of their captain Salman Butt as part of a sting operation carried out by a tabloid newspaper.

Mohammad Amir

All three received five-year bans from cricket and, together with sports agent Mazhar Majeed, jail terms.

Amir, who served three months in an English young offenders institute, has only played limited overs internationals for Pakistan, but his career could come full circle when the first of a four-Test series against England starts at Lord’s, ‘the home of cricket‘, on July 14.

Misbah believes Amir, who was one of the hottest properties in world cricket at the time of his ban, has lost none of his skill.

“If you look at his bowling speed, swing and control –- it’s there,” said Misbah at Hampshire’s Rose Bowl ground near Southampton, where Pakistan were training Monday.

“He can still be the best bowler in the world,” he added ahead of Pakistan’s opening three-day tour match against Somerset at Taunton starting Sunday.

“Whatever form of the game he has played since his comeback, he has done well,” said key batsman Misbah of Amir, who in his 14 Tests before his ban took 51 wickets at an average of under 30 apiece.

“He knows he is under pressure but he is handling it well,” the Pakistan captain insisted.

“This is a good chance for him to come here, the place where he had those problems, and show the world he is there to perform and deliver for the team.

“It is a chance to win back all his fans. It’s a great opportunity and he’s working hard.”

As for Amir receiving a potentially hostile reception from English spectators, Misbah said: “It might happen –- you can always hear voices.

“The best way is to concentrate on your skills and your duties and Amir has to focus on his game and what he has to do. He is doing well.”

Microscope

Pakistan coach Mickey Arthur said he had been impressed by Amir’s attitude since taking charge of the side just over a month ago.

“His training has been excellent, he’s fitted back into the team exceptionally well,” explained Arthur.

“It’s up to me and the coaching staff to make him the best he can possibly be in these conditions,” said Arthur, who previously coached Australia after making his name internationally when in charge of his native South Africa.

“We all understand he’s going to be under the microscope and he realises that too.”

“The way he’s trying to handle that is to let his performances do the talking.”

This is Pakistan’ first full of tour of England since their infamous 2010 visit.

Pakistan, however, have won their last two Test series against England, in 2012 and 2015, both of which took place in the United Arab Emirates.

England defeated Sri Lanka 2-0 in a three-Test series that concluded with a rain-marred draw at Lord’s earlier this month.

But Arthur said he took heart from the vulnerability of England’s top order.

“I do (see weak links) in the top order. Alastair Cook and Joe Root play such a vital role in that set-up.

“I know Jonny Bairstow has played exceptionally well against Sri Lanka but we don’t know who will replace Nick Compton and James Vince is still trying to find his way.

“If we can put their top-order batting under real pressure, we also have a world-class leg-spinner in Yasir Shah.

“So whenever we bowl, there will be no easy period for batsmen.”

‘Finding Dory’ Splashes Box Office Competition

Pixar’s “Finding Dory” floated atop the box office over the weekend, taking in $73 million and sinking the sequel to “Independence Day,” industry results showed Monday.

“Dory,” voiced by Ellen DeGeneres, follows a forgetful fish on a quest to find her parents, much as she did as a supporting character in the 2003 animated hit “Finding Nemo.”

The film, only in its second week in theaters, has so far reeled in $286 million in the United States.

It splashed past “Independence Day: Resurgence,” which made a disappointing $41 million in its weekend debut, according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations.

A sequel to the 1996 humans-vs-aliens summer blockbuster, the latest installment is a second helping of space invaders and special effects that has been widely panned by critics.

“Central Intelligence” was third at the box office, with $18.2 million. The action-comedy about a spy who recruits a high school buddy for a caper stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart.

“The Shallows,” starring Blake Lively as a surfer who is terrorized by a shark, earned $16.8 million in its debut.

“The Conjuring 2,” which stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as a paranormal-investigating couple, earned $7.7 million in its third week.

Rounding out the top ten films of the weekend were:

— “Free State of Jone” ($7.6 million)

— “Now You See Me 2” ($5.6 million)

— “X-Men: Apocalypse” ($2.5 million)

— “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” ($2.5 million)

— “Warcraft” ($2.2 million)

Amir Liaquat Fails To Break Record of Longest Ramazan Transmission on TV

Aamir Liaquat Hussain

UPDATE: Amir Liaquat fell short on the 44-hour-long transmission, as he could only manage a 33 hours, 16 minutes and 32 seconds at a stretch. Which, we have to hand to him, is an achievement in it self.

May be Amir Liaquat aimed too high, reached too far when he set out to break the record for the longest Ramazan transmission TV. Little did he know that this feet would prove too great for him to achieve.

Style Trend Alert: Chokers – A Must have Accessory

Statement jewelry has always been an obsession among fashionistas and teens. From bold earrings to oversize rings, chunky necklaces to funky headgear, we have seen it all but it is time to flaunt some neck kissing chokers. They are back with more options this year as even a scarf can be worn as a choker. This is a surprise trend fresh off the runways and we are seeing celebrities wearing chokers at almost every event.

90’s teens must have remembered chokers as they were the coolest thing back then. A leather, velvet or silky strap around your neck with a hanging metallic pendant was the one trend that stayed for long. The trend is back after so many years and it’s time to wear chokers again.

ChokersCelebrities from Rihanna and Gigi Hadid to Kendell Jenner, everybody is making a style statement with this humble piece of jewelry.  You can get inspired from the celebrity styling and must add a choker to as many looks as you can. The best thing about chokers is that they can be worn casually as a thin or thick fabric made or you can go formal with metallic and studded finishes.

Style Trend Alert 2016: Tulip Pants

The coolest choker of this year is the scarf ones. Just wrap any beautiful printed or embellished silk scarf around your neck and flaunt your very own DIY choker. There’s no stopping when it comes to being creative with a jewelry piece as humble as a choker.

Mahira Khan wearing Chokar

The Trend has been spotted among Pakistani celebrities and across the border too. Star Pakistani Actress and soon to be Bollywood debutant, Mahira Khan was spotted wearing a beautiful Choker recently when she received  ‘Unstoppable Emerging Talent’ award at the first ever Femina Middle East Women Awards 2016 in Dubai. The golden metallic piece of jewelry suits her pretty well and accentuate her styling of a Saree. Totally loving this look on her.

5 Trendy Ways to Wear a Scarf

Super Model Iman Ali graced the cover of Women’s own magazine with oh so fancy DIY choker. Totally in love with her net wrap with gold hints. This looks so stylish and easy to replicate even. How about using some fancy stoles for this?

Model Hira Tareen was spotted wearing a minimal choker on the red carpet of Fashion week. Simple but spot on styling to compliment her stripped top.

My favorite choker look of the year is none other than the vivacious Amna Babar. Can’t stop drooling over this emerald green choker on her. Too elegant to avoid.

Game of Thrones Season 6 Finale: 5 Shocking Things That Happened!

Season 6 of Game of Thrones finally comes to a close, and that too with a bang. The season has had its ups and downs, but the showrunners do know how to make an impression and leave the fans wanting more. They’re out of luck for now – Game of Thrones returns in a little bit less than a year, and it is going to be an agonizing wait.

To recap the events of the big season 6 finale, a whole lot went down. We see Samwell Tarly, who remained in the background for a lot of the season, arriving at the Citadel to pursue his Maester’s degree, and Melisandre exiled by Jon Snow for her involvement in murdering Princess Shireen. We see a moment of victory for Arya Stark, and Cersei literally end things with a bang.

Game of Thrones being the show it is, we were prepared – yet not – to be shocked more than once in this season finale. And deliver the shock it did. Let’s recap the 5 most shocking things that happened:

1. Sansa Struggles

While Sansa is the one who assured the victory in the Battle of the Bastards, no one except Jon Snow seems to know it. It’s obvious by her face when she witnesses Jon Snow being pledged the swords of Lyanna Mormont, Wyman Manderly, and Galbert Glover, that she does feel a sting.

sansa in GOT

It seems that men in positions of power are always somehow pulling her strings to use her or messing with her life.

2. Arya’s Revenge

As Walder Frey celebrates his success in retaking Riverrun, sitting all alone in a dining room, he is informed by a serving girl that he would be having his sons for lunch. Yes, you heard that right the first time. Frey pie was served for dinner. The serving girl? Arya Stark, back in action and raring to go.

While Arya is seemingly on her way home, it’s safe to assume she’s going to be making a few deadly errands along the way.

3. Jon Snow’s Parentage

Finally, a piece of the puzzle that we’ve been dying to know is revealed – Jon Snow’s mother was Lyanna Stark, while Ned Stark was not his father – making his father the song of King Aerys, Rhaegar Targaryen.

Jon Snow is an heir to the Iron Throne, and none the wiser to it.

4. Cersei Ascends the Iron Throne

After King Tommen outlawed trial by combat, damning Cersei to face a tribunal of religious fanatics, it seemed that things were getting real iffy for Cersei. Needing to find a way out of a situation, Cersei turned to the most radical solution – she blew up the Sept. And that too, with everyone in it.

game of thrones

Say goodbye to High Sparrow, Ser Loras, and Margaery Tyrell. King Tommen was spared, only to later throw himself off a balcony.

5. Daenerys Heads to King’s Landing

Daenerys is on her way to King’s Landing to take what is hers. Before making her way to King’s Landing, Dany named Tyrion as her official hand, and Varys procured her some alliances, from Ellaria Sand and House Tyrell.

Will the next season have a showdown of epic proportions between Cersei and Daenerys?

While the next season is months and months away, the fan theories are already in formation. One thing’s for sure, the season finale has left us with a lot to talk about! Of course, no episode review is complete without a few reactions from the fans themselves. Check them out below!

Rise of the Machines: Pakistani Roboteers Hunt Global Soccer Glory

The little striker wearing a crescent moon and star jersey lines up his penalty and kicks right, netting his goal as the keeper dives the wrong way and hits the ground yelping in pain.

Both players are teammates practising to representPakistan in a major world football tournament.

Unlike their low-ranked flesh-and-blood counterparts, however, these are advanced robots whose programmers are set to compete against students from the world’s top universities as they look to showcase what their country can do in the world of Artificial Intelligence.football robot2

Students at Pakistan‘s National University of Science and Technology (NUST) will this year for the first time send a team to the annual RoboCup, an event featuring 32 universities that will be held in Leipzig, Germany from June 27 to July 4.

The six machines are NAO humanoid robots purchased from France’s Aldebaran Robotics at a cost of roughly $17,000.

It is in fact the third year that NUST, Pakistan‘s premier engineering institute, has qualified for the prestigious cup.

robots in pakistan Nust

But a lack of travel funds has meant their dream of representing their country on the world stage had to be placed on hold — until now.

“Our dream came true this year when the university managed to allocate 1.5 million rupees ($14,336) for the team’s travel to Germany,” Dr Yasar Ayaz, head of the department of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence told AFP.

The amount is enough only for three students instead of all 10 involved in the project to travel to Germany and participate in the event, and the university is still hoping to close the gap with funding from sponsors.

“We are not disheartened…something is better than nothing,” Ayaz said.

Beating humans

The first robot football league was started in 1993 by a group of Japanese researchers and named the Robot J-League, after the Japanese professional league.

Robots

Following a surge of outside interest, the initiative was extended into a international project and the Robot World Cup Initiative, or “RoboCup”, was conceived.

The first edition was held in Osaka in 1996. Its stated aims: “By the middle of the 21st century, a team of fully autonomous humanoid robot soccer players shall win a soccer game, complying with the official rules of FIFA, against the winner of the most recent World Cup.”

For the time being, however, that goal appears a long way off.

Students tap away at their laptops in their university lab, programming their code. Zain Murtaza, who leads the ten-member team, sets up the cute robots on their nine-by-six feet pitch, and the action begins.

Each robot has two cameras on their faces guiding their movements. “The cameras take pictures and feed them to the computers installed inside, which help them decide about their movements and recognise movements of the other players,” Ayaz explains.

They walk around the field with short staccato movements, pulling their legs back like a golfer lifts his club before unleashing an ungainly kick that sends the plastic orange ball rolling along the floor.

Mishaps and tumbles are frequent, and the process makes for awkward viewing.

Humans are allowed to make minor interventions, but the robots’ movements are entirely their own, with results hinging on how cleverly the machines are programmed to carry out their roles.

The work is a labour of love for the Pakistan team.

“This is a whole new world… I want to teach robotics to students and to tell them how interesting it is to interact with the robots,” says Murtaza, who has completed his Masters in the subject and has plans to complete a doctorate.

“These are my babies,” he adds.

Autonomous future?

Pakistan‘s progress in the field of AI mirrors its advancement in the IT sector, where the South Asian giant of 200 million people is considered a mid-tier player — particularly for software outsourcing.

Cheap labour, a relatively well-educated middle-class that speaks English and has access to markets in North America helped exports grow to $2.2 billion in the fiscal year 2014.

According to Ayaz, advancements in AI could also prove valuable to Pakistan‘s small manufacturing base, in addition to being the next major area of scientific research.

Earlier this month Internet giant Google announced it was setting up a dedicated AI research group to focus on machine learning — a field of computer science that gives computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed.

Elsewhere, automakers like Honda are devoting resources to develop autonomous driving technologies.

Computing is also a field where increasing numbers of Pakistani women, who have traditionally steered clear of science and technology jobs, see a future for themselves.

Ramazan Ratings 2016: ARY Replaces Geo as Most Watched Channel in 2nd Half of Ramazan

Ramazan Ratings 2016

During the holy month of Ramazan, we are subject to a competitive back and forth amongst T.V. channels as they work very hard to compete amongst eachother and get better ratings. The extravagance and weirdness associated with Ramazan transmissions and drama shows on our T.V sets continues in full swing!

Two weeks of Ramazan have passed now and the bid for better ratings is still a war that is being raged, while entertaining the masses in more ridiculous ways– at least when it comes to post iftaar gameshows.

Below you can take a look at the average ratings of each channel for the second week of Ramazan:

averageratings

While Geo Entertainment and ARY Digital both remain at the top of the charts, as compared to the second week of Ramazan, ARY Digital now has a higher TRP of 1.22 as compared to the average TRP of 1.01 of Geo Entertainment. HUM TV is retaining its humble position right after the two top channels, with a viewership of 0.51.

In comparison to the first half of Ramazan, ARY Digital has replaced GEO Entertainment as the most watch channel.

However, this week sees GEO News and Express News rise in the ranks, with average TRPs 0.26 and 0.17 respectively.

ARY Digital’s successful viewership can of course be credited to the masses’ fascination with Jeeto Pakistan, a post iftaar transmission and gameshow hosted by celebrity Fahad Mustafa. While mind-boggling and downright embarrassing on multiple occasions, it does make for good television.

The chart below can give you a look at the post iftaar ratings for the second week:

postiftaarratings

It is clear that people are tuning in to ARY Digital after iftaar to watch Fahad Mustafa work his magic as compared to Amir Liaquat on GEO.

With a TRP of 3.78, it is clear that Jeeto Pakistan is much more popular as compared to GEO Entertainment’s Inaam Ghar, hosted by the notorious Aamir Liaquat.

This is obvious in the fact that GEO Entertainment is only pulling in a TRP of 1.65 post iftaar, which is much lower as compared to that of ARY Digital’s (3.78).

HUM TV again is holding its own with a TRP of 1.34 after iftaar, and GEO Kahani following close behind with a viewership of 0.94.

HUM TV is currently airing Mann Mayal and Udaari, which seem to be the more popular ones, while Khuwab Saraye, Deewana, and Zara Yaad Kar also seem to be some of viewers’ favourites.

According to the charts, URDU 1 and A PLUS are also raking in viewers post iftaar – at least ones that don’t automatically tune in to see either Fahad Mustafa or Aamir Liaquat indulge in amusing antics.

As for ratings during Sehri and Iftaar, you can see the respective charts below:

sehriratings

iftaarratingsAs being observed from the charts, while ARY Digital is reigning supreme in general, when it comes to the iftaar and sehri transmissions alone, GEO Entertainment is doing everything right! For its sehri transmission, Pak Ramazan hosted by Amir Liaquat, GEO Entertainment has a TRP of 0.74, closely followed by ARY Digital’s TRP of 0.66. ARY Digital’s Sehri and Iftaar transmissions Shan-e- Ramazan are hosted by Junaid Jamshed and Waseem Badami.

GEO Entertainment’s rating for iftaar time are even higher as compared to its sehri tranmission, with a TRP of 2.05, while ARY Digital’s iftaar transmission rakes in a viewership of 1.46.

For both iftaar and sehri, HUM TV follows in behind the two top channels, with GEO News and then Express News racking in the viewers as well.

While ARY Digital is staying ahead of the game for now, let’s see how the rest of the month fares for the channel.
