Update: The New Islamabad International Airport (NIIA) is in the making to be one of the biggest commuter aircraft, and is being said to be functional by June 2017.

According to the new reports, completion of all airport structure works is to be wrapped up by 25 December. After the structure has been taken care of, the next 6-8 months will be to test it.

Rs. 3 billion have been billed under Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for 2016-17 to allocate in the new structure design required.


The capital of Pakistan has been witnessing the development of its airport for quite some years now; however, the New Islamabad Airport will finally be operational and open to public by next year, according to Secretary Aviation Division, Irfan Elahi.

During a briefing to the National Assembly Standing Committee (NASC) members, he said that the access roads to the airport will be completed this year and regular flights will commence from 30th June 2017.

The project commenced when Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz laid the airport’s foundation back in 2004. The construction process started without the approval of the design; it was given to 17 different contractors.

Benazir Bhutto International Airport in Rawalpindi currently serves around 3 million people every year. It has 20 check-in counters and a parking space for up to 400 vehicles.

The new airport will have 90 check-in counters, a parking space for 2000 vehicles and it would serve up to 9 million people per year.

How will Brexit Affect Travel

The chairman of the NASC, Rana Mohammad Hayat Khan, emphasized on no further delays in the completion of the airport project.

 “The cost of the project has also increased due to various reasons and we cannot afford further delays.”

While also mentioning that the quality should be maintained during construction; the quality of the airport will reflect the image of the country since it is the federal capital.

During the meeting of the NASC, questions were raised regarding the runways being too close, so as to allow 2 aircraft to land or takeoff at the same time. An official from the Civil Aviation Authority replied that,

 “Sometimes, a runway cannot be used due to problems such leaked fuel on the runway. So instead of stopping flight operations, the second runway will be used should the need arise.”

It is expected to be the best airport in the country.
