Mariyam Nafees’s latest posts will change the landscape of online bullying and harassment of prominent female names.

What Happened?

A man named Fahad Khan private messaged the actress about a request. Without any shame or hesitation, he had posted an offer for her. This user was giving Mariyam Nafees Rs. 3 lacs in “hard cash” if she agrees to spend some time with his friend. What’s sadly amusing is how he sells the friend: he is from “abroad” and a “nice guy”. Buddy, if he’s such a nice guy why do you have to keep finding people to spend time with him?

Mariyam Nafees got this request like many of her coworkers. However, what she did differently was that she straight up put this on Instagram. She exposed the user who had probably done this with many other women too. Moreover, she had an important message for all.

“Actresses Are Not Prostitutes”

Mariyam Nafees also penned a long note with the post that resonates with almost every working woman. She demanded that people stop this mentality from both sides: men should be taught not to do this and women to be taught not to tolerate this.

Working in a profession that puts you in the limelight does not mean one is a prostitute. In our society, women who agree to be on TV or are a public personality, are viewed as ‘available’. However, Mariyam Nafees is here to teach everyone a lesson. “We come from educated backgrounds” to make a name, this disrespect will not be tolerated.

How Did Others React?

The comments are mainly full of women who are beyond proud of Mariyam Nafees for speaking up. Others are relating to the experience she just had. For women, such messages that seem wildly absurd to the common man are but everyday experiences.

Do Men Get Such Messages?

Another important factor Mariyam Nafees pointed towards is how hardworking actresses are. Just like their male counterparts, they also spend long shifts on their feet, trying their best. Mariyam Nafees noted that she and her coworkers often work 12-hour shifts and even longer ones. Then why must their effort be reduced to simply ‘spending time’ with unknown men?

Male actors in the industry rarely get said disrespectful and shameful messages. It is precisely this difference that Mariyam Nafees elaborates upon in her caption when she calls out this behaviour.
