NASA has discovered a planet which resembles our home planet, Earth and is being referred to as Kepler 452b. This the very first Earth-like planet which is orbiting a star which is just like the Sun but located 1400 light years away from Earth.

Deemed by NASA as 60 percent larger than Earth and 1.5 billion years older, the planet may be in all likelihood termed as the Earth 2.0.

According to John Jenkins, the Kepler data analysis lead at NASA’s Ames Research Center, “It’s simply awe-inspiring to consider that this planet has spent 6 billion years in the habitable zone of its star, which is longer than the age of the Earth. That’s considerable time and opportunity for life to arise somewhere on the surface … should all the necessary ingredients and conditions for life on this planet [exist].”

Scientists at NASA are more excited than ever about the potential of existing life that could be found on this planet.

A planet-hunting, space telescope called Kepler was used to locate Kepler 452b and this was the closest to Earth planet that was cited although there are other discoveries as well. There was also the announcement of 11 more newly found planets.

Nasa also announced that 521 new exoplanet candidates had been discovered which orbit around their star’s habitable zone. Nine orbit stars similar to ours in size and temperature.
