The much neglected international airport of Pakistan’s capital city has finally received some upgrades and fast track services.

PM Nawaz Sharif inaugurated the new facilities and the added fast track services, worth PKR 460 million, yesterday at the Benazir Bhutto International Airport.

One of the highlighted new features includes a new taxiway installed that allows landed aircrafts to exit the runway soon after landing. This would open up space for the next incoming aircrafts to land or the lined up ones to take off without any delay whatsoever.

As part of inaugurations, PM Nawaz Sharif was welcomed with a water cannon salute at the taxiway, where two of CAA’s fire tenders sprayed aerial water shots, creating an arch of water and a rainbow. This rare water cannon salute is presented to only special flights.

The PM visited all the renovated areas of the airport that promise to provide all the necessary facilities to passengers. The newly renovated Benazir Bhutto International Airport will serve as the main airport only till the completion of the new international airport for the capital city, currently being built at Fateh Jang.

As the PM made rounds to the airport terminal via the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) coach, his CAA Advisor, Shujaat Azeem briefed him about the revamped facilities for the passengers.

According to reports, the airport parking slots have been bumped up to 700 with additional 375 specifically reserved for staff members and the airport has been provided with entire building wheelchair access, free WiFi access and toilets for the handicapped.

The Benazir Bhutto International Airport has also been marked now as a no-smoking zone. The noteworthy aspect of the renovation of the capital’s international airport is that no additional trees had to be cut as part of the expansion plans.
