Technology-giant, Apple, has officially taken the cover off of its latest flagship tablet, iPad Air 2, which is being dubbed as ‘the world’s slimmest tablet’, with pre-orders opening for the sixth generation Apple tablet from October 17. The tablet will launch along with the iPad Mini 3 in the week commencing October 20, 2014.

Following the much hyped unveiling and release of the iPhone 6 last month, in September, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook took to the stage in Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California, and gave a low down of the newest tablet.

The new iPad Air 2 is only 6.1mm thick, making it the slimmest tablet ever. It has the following features:

  • 9.7-inch screen, with the lowest reflectivity of any tablet device, reducing glare by more than 50%;
  • New A8X, 64-bit chip based processor, which is based on the A8 processor used in iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus;
  • 8MP iSight camera with f/2.4 aperture, with an ability to capture 1080p full HD video;
  • Improved front-facing FaceTime camera with an f/2.2 aperture, a feature which lets in 81% more light with efficient face-detection;
  • TouchID fingerprint scanner built into the home button, like in the recent iPhones;
  • Added support for 802.11ac Wi-fi networks;
  • 10hr battery life

The ‘world’s slimmest tablet’ is available in three colors – space gray, silver, and gold. Although the 32GB model has been discontinued by Apple, the new tablet comes at a hefty price.
