Instagram is rolling out an authentication process that will ask users to verify a phone number, a tool that will serve to reassure its 400 million users including celebrities and brands.

According to TechCrunch, the photo-sharing site is testing out the new feature following calls to beef up security from hackers.

The two-step authentication process is modeled after Facebook’s security system, Instagram’s parent company.

Users are asked to provide a phone number. A verification code will be sent to the phone and must be used to complete the login when suspicious activity is detected.

The move is meant to protect regular users from having their photos deleted and reassure celebrities and brands who use the photo sharing site as a promotional tool, who are particularly prone to hack attacks that could damage their reputation, spam and scare away followers.
