Only four years since its launch and Instagram has already taken over the micro-blogging network Twitter by hitting 300 million users yesterday.

The photo sharing app, owned by Facebook, is one of the fastest growing social media networks, with over 70 million photographs and videos shared on the platform every day.

Kevin Systrom, CEO of Instagram, made the announcement at a blog, “We’re proud to announce that there are now more than 300 million Instagrammers.

Instagram is home to creativity in all of its forms, a place where you can find everything from images of the Nile River to the newest look from Herschel Supply or a peek inside the mind of Taylor Swift.”

Mark Zuckerberg, on the other hand, posted a photo to make the announcement.

Congrats to the Instagram community for reaching 300 million people! Here’s a photo of Kevin and me celebrating in the Instagram gravity room.

Since many celebrities, brands and athletes use Instagram, the firm has decided to roll out authenticity badges to them so that users know they are following the genuine account and not a fake copy.

Moreover, the Instagram team is continuously working to check accounts for spam and delete them forever to make using the Instagram experience a whole lot better.

Systrom was quoted in a blog saying, “We’re committed to doing everything possible to keep Instagram free from the fake and spammy accounts that plague much of the Web. As part of this effort, we will be deleting these accounts forever, so they will no longer be included in follower counts.”

Many brands use Instagram for marketing and the network’s efforts to remove spammy accounts and award verified badges to authentic brands might help it establish it as a better advertising platform.
