The fairytale run of Team India at the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025 has ended in the most fitting way possible, with silverware in one hand and a record-breaking cash reward in the other.
After the Indian women lifted their maiden ODI World Cup title by beating South Africa by 52 runs at Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a staggering $5.75 million cash prize for the team.
A Reward Fit for Champions
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the announcement, calling it “a token of appreciation for the women’s team.” The amount will be shared among the players, support staff, and selectors, recognising the collective effort behind India’s historic triumph.
It’s not just the board’s generosity that’s turning heads. The Indian women have already pocketed $4.48 million in prize money from the International Cricket Council (ICC), a whopping 239 percent increase from what Australia received for winning the 2022 edition.
This year’s tournament also featured an overall purse of $13.88 million, comfortably surpassing the $10 million offered during the last men’s championship, a clear sign of how far women’s cricket has come.
From Setbacks to Glory
India’s road to the title was anything but smooth. They stumbled in the group stage, losing three consecutive matches that nearly derailed their campaign. But just when the critics began to write them off, the team fought back with grit and composure.
They secured the last semi-final spot and then pulled off one of the biggest upsets in women’s cricket history, knocking out seven-time champions Australia, the tournament favourites.
From there, momentum carried them through to the final, where they delivered a near-perfect performance in front of a packed home crowd in Navi Mumbai.
