With less than a month to go before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, Bangladesh find themselves in an unusual and tense situation. Reports suggest that if the team refuses to travel to India for their scheduled matches, they could face serious consequences, including potentially forfeiting points in the tournament.
The controversy stems from a request by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) to the ICC to move their matches from India to Sri Lanka due to security concerns.
According to ESPNcricinfo, the ICC rejected the request during a virtual meeting on Tuesday, reportedly stressing that Bangladesh would need to travel to India to participate.
However, the BCB has denied receiving any ultimatum, insisting that no formal threat of sanctions was communicated during the discussion. As of now, both the ICC and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have yet to release an official statement clarifying the outcome.
Tensions Fueled by IPL Controversy
This uncertainty has been magnified by a recent incident in the Indian Premier League. Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman, who was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 9.2 crore in the December auction, was abruptly released on reported directives from the BCCI.
The move drew strong criticism from the BCB and is widely believed to have triggered Bangladesh’s formal approach to the ICC. The combination of the IPL issue and security concerns has put Bangladesh in a tricky position just weeks before the World Cup begins.
Bangladesh’s World Cup Schedule
Bangladesh are in Group C and face a challenging start to their campaign. Their opening three matches are scheduled in Kolkata: against West Indies on February 7, Italy on February 9, and England on February 14.
They will finish the group stage against Nepal in Mumbai on February 17.
With the tournament being co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, the team will have to make critical decisions soon. Any refusal to travel could not only affect their points tally but also disrupt preparation and momentum ahead of crucial group matches.
